Re: Having difficulty with metta practice

Why would one wish happiness for all beings if it is felt they are not deserving of it? One arouses a wish for it because it's what all beings wish for themselves. And the fact that the yogi wishes for the same for himself permits him to empathize with their wish for it, and based upon that, to aro...

Re: Having difficulty with metta practice

The first step of feeling that all beings everywhere truly deserve to be happy is to realise that you, more than anyone anywhere, is fully and truly deserving of true and unadultered happiness. Why do you say that? I am aware that New Age teachers who give guided meditations incorporating a bastard...

Re: Having difficulty with metta practice

Something I noticed, but necessarily the case, is that you didn't include metta towards yourself in your list of practices. If you just forget, then OK, but if not, that should be your priority. Yep. It really is the most important prerequisite and the one most westerners tend to gloss over, becaus...

Re: Is it right to get ordained and let your cats behind.

I think there are humans in your life with a far greater capacity for feeling loss than your cats who might be more poignant to consider. They may have the capacity to rationalise the why of it, but I doubt that will make their sense of loss less than your cats. It just sounds a bit like your perspe...

Pretty crucial typo here. Should say:

"and that the flexing happens by opening the hips and NOT by bending at the knee."

Re: Some questions

I usually use half-lotus with a small cushion under my spine. Sometimes it gets really uncomfortable and I feel like I have to move. Should I fight this urge, or just move? I've heard conflicting accounts. It really depends on what kind of pain. Some are transitory, others warning signs. If your po...

Re: We're (almost) all going to hell? (Question on Pansu Suttas: Dust)

Living in the modern western world is, to my mind, a quite misleading image of what is generally entailed by human life. And even then, it's skindeep. For millenia, people have warred against each other, raped, stolen, and destroyed each other, lied and deceived. They still do all over the world. In...

Re: Joseph Goldstein: Achieved is the End of Craving

I put together this video yesterday, with what I felt was one of the most insightful sections of Goldstein's Dhamma talk... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kLdRbpkvAZ0  Three years belated thanks, Chris. The talk was excellent, goldstein is a bit like a gentle shower on a heaving summer day, ...

Re: Good reasons to reject Mahayana and follow Theravada

As a Mahayanika with a lot of love for Theravada, maybe I can offer some reasons on why I have always felt very attracted and connected to Theravada: Coherent presentation - The Pali Canon is just a beautiful presentation of teachings with an internal consistency and coherency that is to me unparall...

Re: Insight timer for iphone, ipad and android: review plse

On iOS I always preferred iSamadhi . They told me they were working on a port to Android years ago but it hasn't materialised... On Android, I prefer the Zazen Meditation Timer . Really like how configurable it is. Might give the insight timer another go though it didn't win me over last time I trie...

Re: DO without rebirth?

Seems like I have heard it said that DO requires the concept of rebirth to make sense . Seems like DN 15 is a detailed discussion of DO but it doesn't seem to mention rebirth. It does mention birth and it contains a section on how to understand the concept of birth but after having read this it doe...

Re: early school who rejected abhidhamma entirely?

i remember reading about a school who rejected the abhidhamma and possibly even their name means "it ends at the sutta pitaka" although that part may be way off. basically they had the vinaya and sutta pitakas and quit there. anyone know what i'm talking about? Most of the schools that had abidhamm...

For example, If I see an attractive male I cant help but be overcome by lust, despite my Sati, I still grasp at "his signs and features", any advice for when this happens? :namaste: Don't make a project of reducing lust or not grasping it signs and features. Rather focus on fully bring into awarene...

I like the way I heard Ajahn Succito describe it in regards to a sense of identity and functioning in the world: It's not the case that arahants have no sense of 'I'. It is just that they have no sense of "I am ." Hi Anders I like to see more details about what he said. I check the following link b...

Re: MN 117: a counterfeit

Greetings Mike, Thanks for sharing, but I'm unable to ascertain from venerable Dhammanando's quote whether the words 'sāsava' and 'anāsava', are the actual words used in Petakopadesa and Nettipakarana to represent 'mundane' and 'supramundane', or whether those treatises use their own words to refle...
