Re: Tantric Theravada?

The northern Shan (Thai Yai) monk Kruba Boonchum has recently become more famous following his accurate prediction that 13 boys trapped in a cave will soon be found alive and well. He performed a ceremony to "open the cave" and is widely respected in northern Thailand and Burma. He also has connecti...

Re: Ordination in the Mahamevnawa in Sri Lanka

Actually Ven. K. Gnanananda, the head of the Mahamevnawa group, once handed us a copy of his book in English and -- a little embarrassed -- he crossed out the word "Thero" behind his name. The reason is that he is a Pali scholar and his aim is to return to the original Buddha's teachings as preserv...

Re: Watching defilements come and go

For instance in the Majjhima Nikāya (I.280) it is said that an arahant is so called because all sinful evil things are remote (āraka) from him. The Vimanavatthu Atthakatha (105-6) defines the term in the following words: "An arahant is so called because he is remote (ārake) from sinful things;" http...

Watching defilements come and go

Watching defilements come and go Ajahn Chah: The Buddha said that the Enlightened Ones were far from defilements. This doesn't mean that they ran away from defilements. They did not. Defilements were there. He compared it to a lotus leaf in a pond of water. The leaf and the water exist together. Th...

Re: Making Hats for Monastics

Woolly hats are essential in the winter, especially in the north of Thailand where temperatures can drop down to zero or even below, such as today (apparently Doi Inthanon was even colder -5 Celsius at 2600 meters). Oh! I would love to send some hats to Thailand. I'm not sure if they will be done b...
