Re: Ordination in the Mahamevnawa in Sri Lanka

The ten year thera designation was popularized, I believe, by the western Ajahn Cha tradition as a way to indicate elder monks. I think you may be referring to the practice of the western Ajahn Cha tradition monks calling ten vassa monks with the prefix Ajahn. Actually, I wasn't. The ajahn designat...

China views foreign Theravada monks with suspicion for political reasons. I know a Thai forest monk who went to live in Yunnan province and was arrested twice by the authorities and kicked out of the country.

The first of those books has been on my reading list for a while. Are they well worth reading, Bhante? A friend recommended it but I have not read it myself. Facts VS fiction: Buddhist themes in Yuval Noah Harari's writings

This thread is to discuss the Buddhist influences in Yuval Noah Harari's texts, such as his books Sapiens and Homo Deus which have become widely read by people who are themselves influential in the world today. The interesting point is that Harari does Vipassana meditation 2 hours daily. http://www....

Re: Non-Thai Theravāda Forest Traditions?

According to the reports of his disciples, Ajahn Mun used to do a lot of Pali chanting on his own, sometimes for hours. They would spy on him to listen to what he was chanting. Mostly it was some of the longer Suttas such as Mahasamaya Sutta and similar ones. He might have memorized them or used a c...
