Re: Reality vs. Concepts

Ha, I know exactly what you mean about imagining the rising and falling, I've definitely caught myself doing that. It's amazing how easy it can be to visualize doing something instead of actually doing it, but the difference is like night and day. No fellow practitioners, but I do have a teacher who...

Re: Burmese Language Resources?

Thank you for the info, Bhante. So everyday phrases like "Ne-kaun-dhala?" and "Twe-ya-da wun-tha-ba-deh" should be avoided when addressing a monk? And yes, while travel to a center or monastery in Burma is something I would think about in the future, my immediate goal is to be able to talk a bit to ...

Burmese Language Resources?

Hello! Any Burmese speakers here, or recommendations for learning materials? Particularly as relates to Buddhism/talking to monks? I've seen some Youtube videos as well as a book for free download, but am wondering if some of the basic phrases they teach are too informal to use with monastics. I don...

Re: Reality vs. Concepts

Bhante, thank you for the link to U Silananda's text, it's very helpful. I've read many articles on your site, not sure how I missed that one. I think my problem here really comes down to the immaturity of my practice--sometimes the philosophical issue in the original post never comes up at all and ...

Re: Reality vs. Concepts

Thanks for the replies! Yes, it's the idea that really any language is going to be conceptual that I was getting at--obviously one shouldn't get too caught up in the words in terms of labeling experience, but a kind of soft mental label is part of most Vipassana traditions, right? I was just curious...

Reality vs. Concepts

Greetings! In insight practice, we're supposed to apply sati to real material and mental phenomena (so being mindful of "rising, falling", as opposed to "breathing", which is conceptual). I've been a little perplexed lately where to draw the line as to what is a concept--it seems by the same logic t...

Re: Mahasi Method in NY/Brooklyn?

Thanks for the NYIMC link, I'll look into their meditation schedule and events. In terms of a retreat, I don't want to jump into 12+hrs of practice per day tooooo soon, but definitely--I'd love to do a retreat somewhere like IMS in the near future. I visited the Burmese temple and spoke with the chi...

Re: Mahasi Method in NY/Brooklyn?

Thank you, Bhante! It definitely is intimidating, I could be wrong but I get the impression there are very few or no Westerners at the temple. Particularly if that is the case, would it be proper to bring some kind of small gift for the monks? Is dark chocolate allowed after midday in the Burmese tr...

Mahasi Method in NY/Brooklyn?

Greetings! I live in Brooklyn, NY and have been beginning to practice in the Mahasi tradition on my own with U Pandita's "In This Very Life", Mahasi Sayadaw's basic instructions, as well as listening to Dhamma talks. I feel that I'm being very careful in my practice, but obviously finding a teacher ...

Hello!

Hello! I've been lurking and reading for several months now, figured it was time to actually join! After being drawn to Buddhism about a year ago I dabbled with Chan (I was previously doing Daoist practice), but it wasn't too long before I felt more drawn to the Pali Suttas and Theravada in general....
