Vajrapani in Pali Canon

Other than the reference in the Ambattha Sutta (DN 3), is Vajrapani mentioned elsewhere in the Pali Canon?

Kanni meditation?

Has anyone any experience of this Kanni meditation approach? I started working through this book (http://ftp.budaedu.org/ebooks/pdf/EN437.pdf) but did not get far before I got so bogged down in terminology. Wondering whether it is worth me pushing further with the book or moving on with something el...

Re: Veganism: a host of issues.

I adopted a vegan lifestyle a couple of years ago because I was unable to justify the alternative and reconcile it with my conscience. The more my compassion developed, the more difficult I found it to eat meat, so a few years ago I became vegetarian. After about half a year, I decided that every ar...

Re: Name of the Buddha

Thank you Paul, but what about in Theravadin countries? Are there Theravada practices in which the name Sakyamuni is used? I ask because I'd never seen it in the suttas (unsurprisingly), yet in the GCSE RE syllabus the Buddha is referred to as Sakyamuni without any caveat as to whether this title is...

Name of the Buddha

Do Theravadins call the Buddha 'Sakyamuni', or is this a Mahayana term? Historically, what is the earliest use of the name 'Sakyamuni'?

Re: How to apply colours to the text ?

I wrote a script back in the e-sangha days that randomised the colour of each letter. I was advised against using it, because it rather impacted the credibility of what I wrote.

Re: Why Dhammawheel is not growing?

My participation in Dhammawheel diminished because, as I studied more, I put more emphasis on practice and less on textual study. Dhammawheel became less relevant to my daily practice, so I left it behind. I pop back occasionally to see what's what, but usually the discussion is at an academically h...

Re: Is it okey to buy Meat in a foodstore and eat?

There are also sound arguments for not consuming mass produced eggs and dairy products, but, at present, I think it is qualitatively more difficult to stay healthy on a vegan diet... I chose to adopt a vegan lifestyle because I could not justify the alternative. At first, I chose to become vegetari...

And wrong view is not harmless.
I would rather inflict harm on myself than contribute to the harm of others.

Re: Is it okey to buy Meat in a foodstore and eat?

What I sometimes observe: Person A: " Can I do this ?" Person B: "Check the rule book!" What I see less frequently: Person A: " Should I do this ?" Person B: "Check your conscience." Just because an act is or isn't forbidden in the Pali Canon shouldn't make its inclusion or omission in the book your...

Re: The case against coffee (important)

Not sure the Buddha would have promoted broadly rejecting scientific research either: seems like an attachment to views to me.

Favourite quote from the Pali Canon

I thought it might be fun (whilst still being within the scope of right speech) for people to list their favourite lines from the Pali Canon. I'm thinking short, punchy sentences rather than entire suttas. It might also be fun if people can explain why they favour the particular line chosen. (If thi...

Re: The name of the Buddha

Interesting. Curious that the name Siddhartha became so commonplace in theravadin countries, yet Sakyamuni did not. I wonder if its just due to personal preferences of the commentary authors.
