Re: What the Zennies say...?

theres nothing buddhist about jhana. all the meditative nonbuddhist traditions do it also--thats how they realize the eternal self etc, through extremely sophisticated concentrations
what makes jhana a buddhist practice is correct analysis ie. right view

Re: How do you contemplate anatta?

you need to be studying nicely outside of meditation, and have a general virtuous attitude accompanying all your activities ie. renunciation, compassion, etc throughout the day. this is like fuel for a fire. then you can use whatever object of observation you relate to best, or whatever reasoning pa...

its way more appropriate to take refuge in them than to have compassion for them--compassion means to want to take away someone's suffering, but such people have the cessation of suffering

Re: Mahayana ontology:skillful means for early Buddhist idea

When you're done doing that with all the reactions, what's left has the quality of the immeasurable. Maybe this ontology about qualities of awakened mind is just a 'skillful means' for taking apart preferences/prejudices (equanimity), anxiety/hostility (metta), fear (compassion), envy/despair (joy)...

Re: the great rebirth debate

I still haven't seen a sutta quote which clearly describes consciousness arising in dependence on form. How about: Dependent on the eye & forms there arises consciousness at the eye. Dependent on the ear & sounds there arises consciousness at the ear. Dependent on the nose & aromas there ar...

since the mind is a primary factor of existence just as energy is there is great energy in the sun. energy is the primary factor of the sun's existence, just as energy is a primary factor in a nuclear explosion or mechanical engine combustion. mind is not a primary factor in the existence of these ...

Re: Guidance concerning the raptures

yes, but also you see, since the bliss from mental and physical pliancy is an entity of the form realm, you actually need to learn how to use them in order to progress up into shamata + the form realm. its easier than it sounds, just let it mix and pervade your body and mind. several unbeliavable su...

Re: Guidance concerning the raptures

How can I progress my concentration through this? you need to pause and look at it and identify with it. with ordinary things we do the opposite, do not pause and do not identify but rather return to our meditation object with strong intent to remain unwaveringly undistracted. however, since legiti...

Re: the great rebirth debate

You appear to be voicing opinions about the rest of us talking about the subject. Rather disparaging ones. That it is "arguing" "pointless" "circular" dodgy" "intellectual proliferation" and non-productive of wisdom. Seems like Aloka was expressing some valid opinions about what happens on this thr...

Re: the great rebirth debate

Prove that there is some sort of ( consciousness, subconsciousness, ālayavijñāna, etc ) that survives death. the experience of a colour, a sound, etc, is nonphysical. you cannot break them with a hammer or physically obstruct them with a particle. you cannot shift awareness 10mm to the west by maki...

Re: the great rebirth debate

While I don't want to say that I am 100% certain rebirth doesn't exist, the evidence we have is difficult to reconcile with teaching of literal rebirth. its the exact opposite. believing that the hard problem of consciousness can be resolved through an explanation that something such as the experie...

Re: Dhammas beyond experience?

My question is: when there is no such direct experience of rapid arising and falling away, how can it be be said that citta s are in reality arising and passing away with such rapidity? Isn't the currently ongoing actual experience (whatever it is -- whether changing very slowly or rapidly) the onl...

there is a difference between weak and strong emergence. the strong emergence of awareness is currently known as 'the hard problem of consciousness', for which there is not even any slight clue of how to deal with in the scientific community, nor has there been much progress in the last couple of d...

really, what did you read? I have a book where his arguments are presented. For example there was example which goes something like: even though one's body doesn't change, the mind can still change, thus mind is independent of the body. This is totally false. Today through fMRI and other advanced m...

Re: the great rebirth debate

There is no such thing as a logical proof for rebirth or kamma. Rebirth is logically possible but it isn't logically necessitated. So please, don't even attempt to use logic to prove rebirth, it just looks bad. :sage: dharmakirti and all of his commentators for 1500 years have given incontrovertibl...
