Re: Combatting Guruism

So in order to avoid supposedly taking a huge risk in reading the nikayas by ourselves (LOL...), we should ask another person to take this risk for us :juggling: I am quite surprised there are people here who actually argue for not investigating the dhamma by ourselves but ask others to do it for u...

Re: Combatting Guruism

The suttas do provide context, I do not see what could possibly be considered missing. The translations are straightforward & lucid, disparity between translator to translator rarely effects meaning. I think it is very wrong to suggest that the Buddha's Dhamma is locked in time 2500 years ago. It's...

Re: Combatting Guruism

To those who think we cannot rely on individual interpretation: If we cannot trust our understanding of the suttas, the actual word of the Buddha himself, how can we trust our understanding of a teacher explaining from those suttas, let alone the teacher themself? This seems to be a self-defeating ...

Re: Combatting Guruism

I think people should try a mix of tactics to tap into the spirit of what the Dhamma is trying to describe. I have my personal preference, but it was only solidified after years of vetting through angles that seemed appropriate at different times. That is for each person to iron out, because we each...

Re: MSNBC Rachel Maddow funny report on Romania situation lol

Just as before, appearently nobody gives a damn about the situation in Romania. A random Trump tweet is more important than this. It is good to realize USA has only 5% of world population and what is happening in other places, especially withing the EU, is just as important. I don't really care muc...

Re: "Rain soddens what's covered..."

I cannot recall where I heard this interpretation, but it seemed interesting. Here is my attempt at a summary: The most significant thing that is covered, protected and taken TO BE there, under its covers, is SELF. But there cannot be knowledge of what SELF actually is - all there can be is what it ...

Re: Climate Change: Politics, Public Policy & Social Issues

Hi Leeuwenhoek2, The below threads have been covering all of these things. I think it would be confusing to start a third. If you think there is a good reason for another thread on the topic please PM the staff and we can discuss it. https://dhammawheel.com/viewtopic.php?f=54&t=18897 https://dhammaw...

Re: Diversity among mods

What's scary is we have a Buddhist forum, which traditionally in the West has been supported by liberal patrons, where most of the moderation decisions are made by conservatives, some very much so, that's not just political, its also goes into the interpretations of Buddhist Philosophy, and as a lo...

Re: Diversity among mods

What view? I'm talking about the narrative that you construct for yourself based on your experience that allows you to identify with circumstances. Cognizing yourself as someone is a view. Using strategies to 'protect' this someone is the activity of emotional reaction. That is all I am saying and ...

Please use the real names and photos of the moderators. This should be non negotiable, IMO. I don't use my name because the internet is full of dangerous people. It has nothing to do with avoiding accountability. Making difficult decisions day after day, having members hold unreasonable grudges aga...

She should be able to think and say whatever she wants, but you have to wonder about anyone who goes public to deny or question the Holocaust. Not because of any overwhelming evidence that it did in fact occur or not (that's besides my point), but because the backlash is clearly known. There is no q...

Re: Diversity among mods

Hi b, We should also bear in mind that Malcolm (the online one) is a force of nature, and I am quite sure his internet persona has grown to a degree that even shocks his offline self. Such prerequisites for speaking keep his own online status in borderline unattainable territory. A brilliant (and ne...
