Re: Which view on DO resonates with you the most?

If “ignorance” ceases then, if the "structural/timeless-only" version of DO is correct, all the “links” must cease. Among the links we have “consciousness” (vinnana), “contact” (phassa) and “feeling” (vedana). Problem is that, as Ven Nanavira acknowledges that the Arahant still lives and therefore ...

Re: Which view on DO resonates with you the most?

Hi boundless, Lots of points to address, but I'll start with this. Regarding these questions of SDC, How do see 'arising' or 'ceasing'? From what position? Does 'arising' and 'ceasing' happen in front of you? Behind you? In your field of vision? In your mind? Somewhere else? Is that view of 'arising...

Re: Which view on DO resonates with you the most?

Can anyone explain simply and clearly what "timeless" means when applied to DO, and give a practical example? Anyone? It always, almost immediately, goes back to you (re)expounding about what you insist are "definitions", so what's the point? Is that what I should expect if I venture an answer?

Re: Which view on DO resonates with you the most?

(Use whatever translation you like, it doesn't alter my point whatsoever.) I am aware of his absolutally brutal mistranslation of the word sankhara. .. I said you could use whatever rendering you like. Use "volitional formations", it doesn't make a bit of difference about what SN 22.55 has to say a...

Re: Which view on DO resonates with you the most?

Read carefully, he said there are descriptions in suttas, not explanations. Take the time to see his point of view before you jump to conclusions. 1) There are explanations in the suttas about volitional formations causing the descend of consciousness into the womb (rebirth). 2) This is of course i...

Re: Which view on DO resonates with you the most?

That passage is ridiculous and is exactly what I am talking about. There are countless, countless suttas that explain how rebirth takes place because of volitional formations. Nanavira claim that Buddha never explained how rebirth takes place is as ridiculous as it gets to any informed buddhist. Do...

Re: Which view on DO resonates with you the most?

But my question was: what is the proximate, technical cause for consciousness descending into the womb in Nanavira view ? To my knowledge, he has no explanation for this and claims we are simply to take it on trust without any explanation and claims the Buddha had no explanation either. But Buddha ...

Re: Which view on DO resonates with you the most?

Why are you refusing to answer this question ? Ok, ok, he believes in rebirth, but why does it happen in his view ? What explanation does he give for consciousness to descend into the womb ? If someone asks him "what makes you believe that after death, there will be rebirth instead of eternal heave...

Re: Which view on DO resonates with you the most?

You said Nanavira does not reject rebirth like secular buddhist do, despite the 1 life interpretation of DO that he likes. I am asking you how does rebirth happen in his view ? And please no BS Does this sound like someone who rejects rebirth? To be a follower of the Buddha it is certainly necessar...

Re: Which view on DO resonates with you the most?

Why are you avoiding the question and playing silly games like this ? What's the point ? But ok, then I shall reformulate the question: What is the cause for consciousness to descend into the womb in Nanavira view ? Same answer. You're still asking the wrong question. You're trying to apply linear ...

arising and ceasing is the nature of existence
Well, according to SN 22.38 that nature is not just arising and ceasing. There are 3 'manifestations'. Go take a look.

Re: Which view on DO resonates with you the most?

Also by the first question I meant that "arising" and "ceasing" are by themselves temporal phenomena and I cannot understand how a structural/timeless interpretation of DO can explain the existence of temporal phenomena themselves. I am aware that this question might be a trivial one... Not trivial...

Re: Which view on DO resonates with you the most?

And you've again avoided to answer the question. As both me and B.Bodhi have shown, Nanavira considers that the proximate cause for biological birth is the puthujjana notions "I was born; I will age and die," or "My self was born; my self ages and dies." This is simply false and not supported by th...

Re: Which view on DO resonates with you the most?

No, it really isn't his position on rebirth , which is what you said above. This passage is about 'birth', not rebirth. You seem to be interchanging these terms at will. By deffinition, any physical birth happening happening in the context of buddhism is a rebirth. :coffee: That is a bold simplific...

Some very helpful suggestions, perkele.

The best thing to do would be:
a) send a request for edits via PM to several members of the staff, or use the "report" button [!] to "report" your post - that will be seen by all the moderators.
b) request a reasonable amount of edits at any given time.

Re: Which view on DO resonates with you the most?

In Nanavira view, belief in a self is the proximate, technical cause of rebirth . This is not his position at all. Really ? 10. Upādānapaccayā bhavo; bhavapaccayā jāti; jātipaccayā jarāmaranam... Re: Which view on DO resonates with you the most?

In Nanavira view, belief in a self is the proximate, technical cause of rebirth. This is not his position at all. Do you not agree that physical birth has ended for the arahant ? Of course there will not be another, but that is not what the structural model of PS describes. It is talking about the ...

Re: Which view on DO resonates with you the most?

1) This is wrong. Nanavira claims they refer to birth and death of phenomenon that happens every moment. He rejects the idea of those passages reffering to physical birth and physical death, hence the non-agreement with 3 life interpretation. http://nanavira.org/notes-on-dhamma/paticcasamuppada Tha...
