Re: How to deal with a monk who's reputation is tarnish by a sexual scandl?

My opinion is that if a monk/teacher can not behave better than I do, then s/he does not have much to teach me. Bad behaviour is reflective of inner conflict and poor inner development. I want to learn inner peace and inner development so it would be a waste of my time to give spend time on a teache...

Re: time travel what would you do

I would make copies of various writings that were lost and referred to in other writings.

I would make videos of Siddhartha Gautama giving dhamma talks.

I would then make a rationale to sell the rights to Wisdom Publications. :)

Re: Diversity among mods

While I welcome that Sam is the new moderator .. maybe DW needs some diversity in its 9th year .. an Asian mod (Sarath possibly .. he almost lives here .. might as well mod while he is here) .. maybe a female mod (unless there already is one .. I do not think so ..) .. a black mod maybe (unless the...

Re: How to get over being wronged?

1. Throw yourself into building good stuff for yourself in your life. Volunteering to help other people in direct interactions with them is one very powerful way to do this. 2. Don't fight it, just notice, over and over again, how being pissed off feels nasty. Reflect that you feeling nasty doesn't ...

To follow interpret ethical rules to the letter of the law is to be unethical, as it shows an unwillingness to do your own ethical thinking which reflects a lack of care about such issues.

Re: Are there any EBT suttas not found in the paali collection?

You can check out the parallels, or lack thereof, from the lists on Sutta Central: https://suttacentral.net Those who don't know any of the relevant languages would best begin with those non-Pali collections that Sutta Central has in English translation. Unfortunately owing to copyright issues with...

Re: the great vegetarian debate

Since it's already there & not for you in particular. The Buddha stated there are 5 kinds of wrong liveliehood, with one of them being "business in meat". There is no such thing as a business without customers. If you buy meat, you encourage more meat to be produced. Anyone who knows anything about...

why do i have to have a political stance? would prefer just the ethical one If you don't participate in the process of making a choice, a choice will be made for you. Being "not political" is a privilege for people who will not be effected by whatever decision is made and who will not care what hap...

Re: Does anyone know about 'e-paper e-readers'? Recommendations would be appreciated

The old Kindle DX does all those things, and it's BIG for an e-reader. http://blog.the-ebook-reader.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/kindle-dx.jpg I got my first eBook reader, a Kindle Paperwhite a few weeks ago and really like it. I don't think it would be good for reading technical manuals and text...

Re: Does anyone know about 'e-paper e-readers'? Recommendations would be appreciated

Hello everyone, my eyes are still having problems, and the light from the computer screen doesn't do them any good. I am looking for an e-reader that: 1.uses 'e ink / e paper' (I hear that is much easier on the eyes) 2. has a large screen, the larger the better 3. can connect to the Internet and ac...

Stiphan, I am a fan of Ajahn Brahm. I couldn't agree with the text in the picture more. Being a fan of Ajahn Brahm, I've heard him express that sentiment a number of times before. The context is in regards to people in relationships who choose to destroy those relationships by bickering over things ...

Re: I disrobed and returned to "normal" life

This have a terrible outcome when very young people are ordained. It has a terrible outcome for any type of person who disrobes after a long time. Older people may not have families who can give them a home until they get back on their feet. Older people might have a harder time finding jobs in the...

Re: I disrobed and returned to "normal" life

James, Thank you for the candid account. Many people would not be that open about their motivations and experiences. Whether they liked reading it or not you did a service to the readers here and possibly people thinking about ordaining, arriving here via Google. Your experiences are things that sho...

Re: I disrobed and returned to "normal" life

I once gave a ride of several hours back from a retreat to a woman from my sutta study class who was hell bent on ordaining. During the whole car ride back she kept chiding me not to waste my life and ordain as soon as I could. She kept asking me why I didn't do it. I gave her some answers that soun...
