Re: Culadasa on Positive Reinforcement

Ajahn Brahm has said similar things in his meditation sessions. He tells people to cultivate being relaxed and happy in the present moment to give the mind a reason to stay there.

Re: Observing the 5th Precept

How did you make the transition I just stopped. After joining Dhamma Wheel about five years ago. I felt it is inappropriate to teach Dhamma and consume alcohol. I still have a lot of peer group pressure to consume alcohol but I never gave to them.   So much r...

Re: Observing the 5th Precept

Go out with your friends. Get a look-alike-drink. Gingerale in a mug instead of beer. Club soda with lime in a glass with ice. Cranberry juice, etc. If anyone asks, say its for your health, doctor's orders. If they have a problems with that, they were never your friends to begin with, only drinking ...

Re: Gude to Translators for Beginners

I would go with Ajahn Sujato's translations.

They are contemporary (new) and they were done for non-academic English speakers, aka they were made to be easily understood.

They are also available free of charge.

Re: Free download of Itivuttaka by J.D. Ireland—EPUB, Kindle, PDF

I've used that translation in my sutta class. The prose is far less clunky, but the translation feels archaic. Why not use the just finished translation of Ajahn Sujato's designed to be easily understood by non-academic English speakers?

Re: Do you like or dislike devotional practices?

If a person is too rational it is difficult to become devotional . Being devotional is emotional . However , devotional is essential to soften the hardened mind. It does help a person to be spiritual instead of being philosophical all the time . I think highly of metta, but I've always seen it as a...

Re: Do you like or dislike devotional practices?

I don't do devotional practices.

Meditation, precepts, and reading up on the Buddha's teachings have a story behind them how they might work to move you forward in life and without requiring dogma. That isn't the case with devotional practices.

Re: Dhammawheel is not growing - because it has zero SEO

I tried these search strings on Google "buddhist forum" "buddhist web board" "buddhist webboard" dhammawheel.com did not come up on the first page for any of them. SEO doesn't have to cost money. I found this from Google for things a person can do their web site to improve visibility https://support...

That's why I switched to DuckDuckGo - https://duckduckgo.tumblr.com or https://duckduckgo.com
Most people are going to switch to DuckDuckGo. In the meantime people who Google on "buddhist forum" aren't going to find dhammawheel.com

It's also a matter of having the right keywords,
Most people are not going to try out multiple search strings.

I think every person want to be number one.
The only way to do this is to pay Google!
DhaRMawheel was on the first page for a Google search on "Buddhist Forum".

Do they pay Google?

Re: I agree with theravada monk but disagree with universal buddhism

What do you think? I think I can't really write anything back to until you mention specific things you think are contradictory. For example, a particular statement Ven Rahula made, what is actually stated in the suttas, what other Theravada monks say, all of that versus what people may or may not m...

Re: Devotional Section in Patipatti section

Many Buddhists come from a place that they aren't interested in devotions. Some "Buddhist curious" people interested in learning about Buddhism, possibly going Buddhist, don't understand it and might be turned away from Buddhism by seeing devotions. Maybe it would be a good idea to have an option to...
