Re: Dunning–Kruger effect

A typical example is people who take to argue against monks eating meat. Saying; - It is so obvious! I can't belive you do not get it! While in reality their view is easily understood by anyone who not a complete imbecile and they are the one who don't comprehend the more complex position. Yet argu...

Re: Dunning–Kruger effect

The problem with the concept of the Dunning-Kruger effect is that everyone fancies themselves as the exception and/or they take their self esteem issues as a sign that they are really a special person after all.

Tibetan tradition is not really Buddhism. Your opinion? Edit: My first post had a wrong link. Sorry about that! https://dharma-documentaries.net/lama-osel-hita It isn't my cup of tea, but life is short. I would rather spend my time meditating and being in nice mental states than criticizing what ot...

Excellent development.

The more people who can devote their lives to the Buddha's teachings the better.

Re: Criticism of triple bhikkhuni ordination in Los Angeles

I have zero problems with it. In fact, I think it is a good thing. I became a Buddhist for what the Buddha's teachings could do for me and other people. Making it possible for women to ordain allows more people so inclined to pursue the Buddha's teachings full time. I don't care about institutional ...

The Fourth Nobel Truth https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M6W8LS9 I haven't seen the film yet, but what I find the most amazing is the choice of Hamlin as the lead actor! Sometimes, it's the life stories of actors, their ups and downs in their careers, and their choice of films to act in that is the most...

Piya Tan is a former Theravada monk (of 20 years) and continues to write on the Dhamma. He has some very good articles. His most recent one:

I think it is a great way for non-buddhists to get their first idea of what Buddhism is about.

Its about a jaded movie star sentenced by a judge to get meditation and dhamma lessons after he is arrested for drunk driving.

Re: Is it wrong to pray to the Buddha?

More often than not I end up praying to the Buddha. Is that wrong practice? I know the Buddha said Therefore, Ananda, be islands unto yourselves, refuges unto yourselves, seeking no external refuge; with the Dhamma as your island, the Dhamma as your refuge, seeking no other refuge. Mahāparinibbāṇa ...

Re: Why we should NOT to ordain?

Hello dear friends , We all know why it is good to ordain, but i would like to ask to those who disrobed (or never ordained) : can you list some reasons why someone should NOT to ordain? Metta :) I was never a monastic, but in my own personal opinion people should not ordain until they have lived a...

Re: Why do Americans not have to announce which country they are from?

One pet peeve of mine, on another forum, people will write "...in my country, blah blah blah ".

Makes me curious, then I have to ask them "what is your country?" to make sense of their comment. Um, why can't you just say I am from X and this is the case here? :-)

Re: What is this vipassana method called?

Wow, skimming over these "answers" not one attempted to answer my questions, only to use my questions as a springboard to go on about their own fixations. There is a vipassana method called "noting" in English. Whatever thought or feeling pops up, you give it a label. Is it also called "The Mahashi ...

What is this vipassana method called?

There is a vipassana method called "noting" in English. Whatever thought or feeling pops up, you give it a label. Is it also called "The Mahashi Method" ? Does "Noting" have another name? Where does it come from? Is there a short, boiler plate piece on the web that describes it? Are there books that...

Re: Should abusive behaviour by monks and nuns towards lay people be public ally discussed on these forums?

Absolutely yes. If you don't talk about a problem, you can't fix a problem. This couldn't be more true than with corruption and abuse. Especially with religious institutions there are too many people willing to sweep things under the rug and willing to tell victims to just take it, all while wrappin...

Re: How to deal with a monk who's reputation is tarnish by a sexual scandl?

My opinion is that if a monk/teacher can not behave better than I do, then s/he does not have much to teach me. Bad behaviour is reflective of inner conflict and poor inner development. I want to learn inner peace and inner development so it would be a waste of my time to give spend time on a teache...

I would make copies of various writings that were lost and referred to in other writings.

I would make videos of Siddhartha Gautama giving dhamma talks.

I would then make a rationale to sell the rights to Wisdom Publications. :)

Re: How to get over being wronged?

1. Throw yourself into building good stuff for yourself in your life. Volunteering to help other people in direct interactions with them is one very powerful way to do this. 2. Don't fight it, just notice, over and over again, how being pissed off feels nasty. Reflect that you feeling nasty doesn't ...
