Re: Changes in attitudes towards global warming

Robert,
Is that slab of text all one quote, from the linked article?
The link is paywalled, so I can't check. I can't even see who the author is ... which might explain much.

Re: The Autistic Buddha

"The Autistic Buddha", as a title for your thread, made me wonder. The Buddha's phenomenal teaching skills just do not make "autistic" a credible adjective.
Now that I know it was never meant to refer to Gotama, that's okay. The book looks positive and may help some people.

I prefer his City of Djinns: A Year in Delhi .
Been reading him since he first burst on the historical writing scene over twenty years ago.
I will look out for it, then.

Nine Lives by William Dalrymple

Nine Lives by William Dalrymple (2009) is labelled a 'travel book' by retailers but that is misleading. It really belongs more on the 'religion' shelf, alongside other books about Asian religions. The author has lived in India for thirty years and Indian reviewers have praised his insight into thei...

Re: Global Warming: Recent Data

why is China still planning to build over a hundred new coal stations. Wouldn't they want to minimize costs and go for solar or wind that the article you cited suggests are more economical. Or is that due to subversion of politicians in China by the coal industry? I was in New zealand last winter f...

Re: Global Warming: Recent Data

. Sure if natural gas turbines are a better way then use them in place of coal. It really does seem that nat gas turbines are better than coal in every respect; cost, air quality, carbon polution, etc.and about the only ones who think otherwise are the big money people who are heavily invested in c...

Re: What is my ancestry? who cares.

Generally, when you become a Buddhist monk you completely disconnect from your ancestors. I know this is not applicable to lay people. But we can learn something from that. Hi, Sarath, If you mean that we should go some way to copying what monks are required to do, I think your logic is faulty. The...

Re: Are we nouns or verbs?

Greetings Kim, That seems to be a radical re-interpretation of Wilde Not really. He managed to work back up the chain of dependent origination as far as... "Dependent upon bhava, jati comes to be." Good for him. It sounds as if it was liberating for him, as far as it went of course. Nice work fop. ...

Re: Are we nouns or verbs?

Fry raises an interesting and somewhat topical idea, but fails to see the contradiction in what he has said. He is not a "thing" (as instantiated by the things which are actors or writers) but goes on to say that he is a person (which is every bit as much of a thing as an actor or a writer is). Thi...

Are we nouns or verbs?

Another way of thinking about our "I" - making habit. nouns-or-verbs.jpg I'm not sure how far it goes, but I do know I have chosen for a long time to say things like "I try to follow the Buddhist teachings" and "I support Labor" rather than " I am a Buddhist" or " I am a Labor voter." And there are ...

You've seen this thread? https://dhammawheel.com/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=1270 :coffee: Kim Yes, I made a new one because that thread seems to be focused on whether the doctrine should be accepted as true or not, whereas I want to know what historical-textual evidence there is for its authenticity. At this time of year we get the release of climate data for the preceding year. People who have been following the science won't get many surprises this time because there have been several previews of the data, but here are the final figures. The 5 hottest years on Earth have all occurred since 201...
