Re: Buddhism and Islam in Asia: A Long and Complicated History

Would you call the British Empire the "Christian Empire"? If not, why not? Thanks Kim. Probably not because my impression is the British Empire started as a (Protestant) commercial empire, which then occasionally used Christianity to justify its ends. Is there any significant difference between thi...

Re: Bodhisattva Path of Theravada

This page presents several versions of the Mahayana Bodhisattva vows - http://www.katinkahesselink.net/tibet/vows.html . Re the OP: the first answers from brady and DNS agree with my understanding, i.e., the bodhisattva path is not totally absent from Theravada but it's way out on the fringe. At the...

Re: Dao De Jing or Tao Te Ching - Book of the way

You could apply the same critique you apply to the no-work hippy-dippy Daoist to the vinaya-observing monastic. Hardly ... alcohol is banned to the monastic, and following the path is hard work! The taoist license to act with "wu wei", to act without "without effort" and "without control", seems a ...

Re: Will certain Buddhists on DW please stop disparaging other faiths

I am troubled by the proliferation of anti-Muslim Topics and posts here. I have to assume the majority of Members also disagree with such posts. We need to take a stand against this, because it damages the perception of Buddhism, especially at a time when Buddhists are persecuting Rohingya Muslims....

Re: Master of mindfulness, Jon Kabat-Zinn

I said earlier that, "if a course of action in anything to do with mental health offers a reasonable chance that it will be beneficial and a low chance that it will be harmful, that's about the best we can expect," and I think that's a perfectly reasonable position to take. As you say, Binocular, no...

Re: Using Iddhi for Personal Gain

Is there even a Sutta reference that Iddhi powers could be used in such a way? Not in the Pali suttas. There is, however, a German translation of a Tibetan gterma called Die Große Rumpelstilzchen Sūtra . It was discovered in the mid-19th century by a pair of Hessian tertöns called the Brothers Grim...

Re: Using Iddhi for Personal Gain

Hey everyone, What are the kammic consequences for using supernormal powers for personal/material gain? For example, if someone were to produce gold with mental powers or by some other resolve bring personal wealth? Most, maybe all, Buddhist traditions forbid monks from showing off supernormal powe...

Re: Master of mindfulness, Jon Kabat-Zinn

It seems like a win-win situation. If you ignore all those who weren't helped by MBSR. That's being unfair, I think. To be fair, we should also ignore all those who weren't helped by Jungian analysis, primal scream therapy, Christian Science, reiki, laying on of hands, etc, etc. Really, if a course...

Re: Master of mindfulness, Jon Kabat-Zinn

I discovered meditation through MBSR years ago and found Theravada Buddhism from there. At the end of the course, the teacher said "to learn more about where this comes from go to access to insight". For me this was perfect, but I realize there are many variations on MBSR. But I do feel it provides...

A new, dire "warning to humanity" about the dangers to all of us has been written by 15,000 scientists from around the world. Re: Global Warming: Recent Data

Alot of what you say may be true but it has nothing to do with kamma. Kamma is intention and action of individuals.....not of societies. I think you are misrepresenting what kamma is. Whether "shared kamma" or 'group kamma" exists has been discussed many times an in my memory there has never been e...
