Re: Master of mindfulness, Jon Kabat-Zinn

I said earlier that, "if a course of action in anything to do with mental health offers a reasonable chance that it will be beneficial and a low chance that it will be harmful, that's about the best we can expect," and I think that's a perfectly reasonable position to take. As you say, Binocular, no...

Re: Using Iddhi for Personal Gain

Is there even a Sutta reference that Iddhi powers could be used in such a way? Not in the Pali suttas. There is, however, a German translation of a Tibetan gterma called Die Große Rumpelstilzchen Sūtra . It was discovered in the mid-19th century by a pair of Hessian tertöns called the Brothers Grim...

Re: Using Iddhi for Personal Gain

Hey everyone, What are the kammic consequences for using supernormal powers for personal/material gain? For example, if someone were to produce gold with mental powers or by some other resolve bring personal wealth? Most, maybe all, Buddhist traditions forbid monks from showing off supernormal powe...

Re: Master of mindfulness, Jon Kabat-Zinn

It seems like a win-win situation. If you ignore all those who weren't helped by MBSR. That's being unfair, I think. To be fair, we should also ignore all those who weren't helped by Jungian analysis, primal scream therapy, Christian Science, reiki, laying on of hands, etc, etc. Really, if a course...

Re: Master of mindfulness, Jon Kabat-Zinn

I discovered meditation through MBSR years ago and found Theravada Buddhism from there. At the end of the course, the teacher said "to learn more about where this comes from go to access to insight". For me this was perfect, but I realize there are many variations on MBSR. But I do feel it provides...

Re: Changes in attitudes towards global warming

A new, dire "warning to humanity" about the dangers to all of us has been written by 15,000 scientists from around the world. The message updates an original warning sent from the Union of Concerned Scientists that was backed by 1,700 signatures 25 years ago. But the experts say the picture is far,...

If not, why not? It's close enough for a newspaper headline. He's one of the pioneers and leading exponen...

Re: Global Warming: Recent Data

Alot of what you say may be true but it has nothing to do with kamma. Kamma is intention and action of individuals.....not of societies. I think you are misrepresenting what kamma is. Whether "shared kamma" or 'group kamma" exists has been discussed many times an in my memory there has never been e...

Thank God for that. From your link: Pollution from China travels in large quantities across the Pacific Ocean to the United States, a new study has found, making environmental and health problems unexpected side effects of U.S. demand for cheap China-manufactured goods. Kamma strikes again! ;) :cof...

Re: Global Warming: Recent Data

The question is when will alternative energy become cheaper than its more pollutive counterparts. Solar and wind are already the cheapest source of energy in many places and situations already. If you google something like 'power generation cheapest' or something similar I think you may be surprise...

Re: Global Warming: Recent Data

Good to see such a constructive conversation going on while I wasn't around - :thanks: Can I just add that batteries are far from the only storage solution? Pumped hydro - using excess solar/wind/tidal power to pump water from a low dam to a higher one, and using the hydro power when the sun sets an...

Re: Global Warming: Recent Data

Its not like signing agreements actually does anything... That's nearly true, but signing is a symbolic act, and symbols do have value. People need to stick to them, which they never will while some relative advantage can be gained by not doing so. In this case, the 'relative advantage' is on the s...

Re: Does illegal downloading violate the 2nd precept?

Likewise as has been mentioned before there are other absurd conclusions from copyright law if we take it seriously, like not being able to sing the happy birthday song or a disney tune in public, etc. Those 'absurd conclusions' are incorrect conclusions. Some creative work is 'in the public domain...
