Re: Tantric Theravada?

There are practices which Buddhists in Thailand take part that are distinct from "Theravada" Buddhism. And in my experience most Thais would see them as such. This would include spirit and ancestor worship, as well as Hindu deity worship. There are also aspects of Thai Theravada and what is accepte...

Re: Dhammawheel is not growing - because it has zero SEO

Fixing the metta description should get us to place 1 but if it doesn't, then we might end up forced to do a negative SEO attack on competitors. For example we can redirect a spammed casino domain to freeshanga.com and hope to get them deindexed by google. We already got one competitor covered sinc...

Re: can you save a draft

Greetings Kim, Or you could be super-public-spirited and trial it here, where you have lots of users and should find out quickly whether it's working, before imposing dubious software on a poor struggling newbie board with (for a while) a lot less traffic. Or, more specifically, David and the webma...

Re: can you save a draft

Greetings Though I am wondering with the software upgrades we've done if the draft function may actually work now if we enable it. Maybe we can leave it on when DWE goes live. If it works there we could try to bring it back here? Metta, Paul. :) Or you could be super-public-spirited and trial it he...

Re: Dhammawheel is not growing - because it has zero SEO

Webmaster fixed those. Someone complained that the Theravada description in the header didn't have the proper diacritic, so we put the correct Pali spelling with the diacritic. Problem now is that google does not read that as "Theravada" but rather some other word. We might need to change back that...

Re: Dictionary.com is dumb and dishonest

Greetings Kim, I've just shared that to word-conscious friends and I'm looking forward to some outraged responses. I think why this re-definition irks me most, is that the new definition is literally the antonym of itself. So in effect, the word now simultaneously means [A] and NOT [A]. .....

Re: Dictionary.com is dumb and dishonest

I'm sure some people are still outraged by the modern usage of gay and decimate ... :jumping: The first of these is actually a real problem for any primary-school teacher wanting to introduce students to older fiction - even from Enid Blyton's era - and it's an example of a constant churn of words ...

Re: When racial division is the subtext of everything...

... The upshot of it all is that hopefully identity politics is in a death spiral (which IMO started in 2015, when we hit peak SJW) and that this is merely the panicked last gasp of those media talking heads and political elites who were on the identity bandwagon. I guess that since they still have...

Yeah. The Oxford Dictionary got criticised for adding modern usage as well... 😎 https://www.telegraph.co.uk/education/10240917/Uproar-as-OED-includes-erroneous-use-of-literally.html Mike :thanks: I've just shared that to word-conscious friends and I'm looking forward to some outraged responses. :to...

Re: HHDL on Interdialog Between Theravadin & Tibetan Buddhists

HHDL's life journey has been utterly amazing, awe-inspiring - and I don't say that sort of thing about many people at all! Memo to self: must find time to watch Kundun again. I listen to the soundtrack pretty often (it's great, too) but have only seen the movie once. https://youtu.be/cFm8oP9c9Hs htt...

Re: Global Warming: Recent Data

If we did a poll I wonder how western Buddhists would answer this question: True or false. There is a strong consensus among scientists that as a consequence of anthropogenic climate change we will see more tropical cyclones (hurricanes). My hypothesis is that a majority would answer true. Whereas ...

Re: MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT: Forthcoming Changes to the DW Forums

The only world that matters is the world inside your mind, trying to fix the world outside your mind is like trying to stop the flow of the ocean. You have no control. The dhammapadda says in conquering your mind you conquer the world. Politics is a waste of time, there were problems 3000 years ago...
