Re: About not kill any living being

I always capture and release insects from the house.
But.......
Let us suppose one is infected with tapeworms.
The medical treatment is to kill them with an anthelmintic drug.
Does kamma permit the killing of them in order to ensure one's own survival?

Re: What did you expect?

Thanks Anapurna (and the others who have looked for it).
That is the one I was thinking of. I should memorize it since
it applies to vexing situations presently endured.

What did you expect?

I seem to recall reading a sutta in which someone is complaining
about the difficulties of life and people, and the buddha responds in
several refrains "What did you expect?"
Does this ring a bell with anyone? I've looked but don't know how to find it
so I can read it again. Thanks

Re: Computer Protection

Its hard not to like Ubuntu Linux. I had it installed as a dual boot setup on my new netbook alongside Windows. I find myself using the Ubuntu all the time. It runs much faster and is quite secure, although a little bit geeky. Bought the netbook from my local computer shop who installed it at no ext...

Re: Computer Protection

I use linux and am not much troubled by malware. Its a dual boot installation so I can start off with windows if I choose. Windows has the free AVG security software. Frankly I prefer Linux for many reasons besides security. Its much faster on these little netbook computers. Using an MSI Wind today....

Re: Too many desires

I am also quite confused and want clarification. There appear to be many folks who think that all desire leads to suffering (dukkha). Apparently they seek to eradicate all desire from their lives since this will lead to "enlightenment." These folks always lump together the words "crav...

Some thoughts and a quote concerning the difference between "craving" and "desire" are outlined at: http://www.urbandharma.org/udharma2/becono3.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; While not technically an economic concern, I would like to add a few comme...

Baboons meditating?

An observation made by a scientist studying baboons in Africa was featured on NPR. See below. "The quiet was total. "I really wondered what was going on," says Smuts. The baboons didn't focus on any one thing. They all, or most of them, gazed down into the little pool right below them...

Re: Bah humbug!

Several years ago I decided that Christmas should be renamed "Consumerfest", at least here in the USA. It has little relationship to its original significance, so I disregard it for the most part. Certainly there are a few that still commemorate the birth of their religion's founder and hi...

I wonder what type of meditation posture they would use? Crossing all eight legs
could be somewhat inconvenient. Thanks for the reminder of the Ringo song; well done.

Re: Tool Use in an Invertebrate

I just saw some video on the news showing the octopus activities. One of them found a half coconut shell on the bottom, dragged it along while looking for another half. Then it neatly crawled inside the first half, and pulled the other half on top to close itself within. These creatures are much mor...

Re: Survival of the Kindest

Hi all- Interesting ideas in this study. Of course their hypothesis will be challenged, as all should be. As a professional archaeologist, it is equally interesting to me how widespread is the desire of modern folks who live in the world of consumerism and "individualism" to believe in a m...

I Am Not I I am not I I am this one Walking beside me, whom I do not see Whom at times I manage to visit, and at other times I forget. The one who forgives, sweet, when I hate, The one who remains silent when I talk, The one who takes a walk when I am indoors, The one who will remain standing when ...

Re: Hi

Hi Preet and welcome. I have learned a great deal here by reading many of the past threads. As someone who is relatively new to Buddhist thinking, I can say already that applying some of the fundamental elements has made a difference in my daily life. This has got to be one of the most civil discuss...
