Re: Why Westerners can't extend loving kindness to themselves?

It's probably a tendency in the West. My guess is that it has to do with high expectations learned through advertisement, combined with a poor understanding of human nature and falibility; and Western guilt.

You know that David is paying for the forum, which means he will always be admin. So who do you actually want to stop being an admin?

Re: MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT: Forthcoming Changes to the DW Forums

Helo.

I think this is a great solution. Given the constraints of the situation, this looks like the best way forward.

Re: Doubt, Dhamma and the Middle Way

Greetings, In the Dhamma, doubt is one of the five hindrances. Doubt specifically about the Dhamma also causes issues... "Furthermore, there is the case of the person in doubt & perplexity, who has not arrived at certainty with regard to the True Dhamma. Then he comes down with a serious disease. A...

Re: Jordan Peterson - The Problem With Atheism

That doesn't make me laugh. Does he also explain how a woman is supposed to be happy about being a man's sex toilet? He doesn't. He is being egregiously misrepresented in the media. ? I ask that type of question anyone who speaks favorably of birth control. It has nothing to do with how someone is ...

Re: Jordan Peterson - The Problem With Atheism

He doesn't. He is being egregiously misrepresented in the media. The New York Times recently did a piece about him. Who is more credible? An institution and a professional journalist whose reputations and livliehoods depend on getting the facts right and who have the time to look into things....OR ...

Re: Jordan Peterson - The Problem With Atheism

JP made me laugh when he said: " We did not fix the female reproductive cycle until the 1960s ". Essentially, he said that Nature or God created the female organism to reproduce offspring is something inherently problematic & broken that needed to be " fixed " or " repaired ". Doesn't sound like Ju...

Re: Jordan Peterson - The Problem With Atheism

Hello. Since that was reasonable, I can reply. I've seen misinterpretations of Jordan Peterson from even brilliant people that I admire. The number 1 thing you have to do to understand Peterson is to always apply the principle of charity. Whenever you start listening with a predisposition of dislike...

Re: Member Poll on "News, Current Events & Politics" at DW

Greetings everyone, I am keen to survey the Dhamma Wheel membership to get your thoughts on "News, Current Events & Politics" and their relationship to this forum. We have always allowed discussion on such topics at Dhamma Wheel - initially in the Lounge, but we then later separated such topics out...

Re: Jordan Peterson - The Problem With Atheism

On Jordan Peterson's objections to atheism... The materialistic atheist view of the world can become a terrible problem in times of generalised dispair, such as in times of war. It is when the despair of war comes that we will rationalize all kinds of athrocities, Simply sounds like an apologist fo...

Re: Jordan Peterson - The Problem With Atheism

On Jordan Peterson's objections to atheism: Perheps the best way to understand his objections is to mention his own fundamental view of morality: every human being should be treated as an individual whose consciousness is a spark of the divine. Treating people as individuals is a standard moral and...

That's not a bad theory. It's baffling how many people believe the Earth is flat. Or pretend to believe... :spy: When talking about conspiracies, we have to consult the expert https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LhqUk28OwHs in order to see the big picture https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2jLs-1GpwQM

We need some catchy slogans, like

"It's the best religion in the world. Just sit."

"Come for the jhana, stay for nibbana."

Re: Free speech, mere offense, direct harm & antisemitism

Well, I think that this thread demonstrates that we are all capable of having a collective think on these thorny issues, and if nothing else, that the situation is not at all black and white. It is difficult, complex and inherently contestable. What this leads to or ought to lead to probably should...
