Re: The conspiracy to end all conspiracies

That's not a bad theory. It's baffling how many people believe the Earth is flat. Or pretend to believe... :spy: When talking about conspiracies, we have to consult the expert https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LhqUk28OwHs in order to see the big picture https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2jLs-1GpwQM

Re: Does Buddhism needs marketing ?

We need some catchy slogans, like

"It's the best religion in the world. Just sit."

"Come for the jhana, stay for nibbana."

Re: Free speech, mere offense, direct harm & antisemitism

Well, I think that this thread demonstrates that we are all capable of having a collective think on these thorny issues, and if nothing else, that the situation is not at all black and white. It is difficult, complex and inherently contestable. What this leads to or ought to lead to probably should...

Re: Free speech, mere offense, direct harm & antisemitism

Either the forum has a politics section, or not. If it has a politics section, then the principle of free speech must apply. No single person holds the entire truth on every political subject, which means that the only way to correct falsehoods is through repeated interaction by honest, and open min...

Re: Free speech, mere offense, direct harm & antisemitism

Anti semitism is as unpleasant a plague as it gets. It's funny that the far right, the far left, and the islamofascists all have deranged opinions of jews, for often contradictory resons.... PS: I'm not jewish. I just get really upset with anti semitism. It is usually a mark of a totalitarian minds...

Anti semitism is as unpleasant a plague as it gets. It's funny that the far right, the far left, and the islamofascists all have deranged opinions of jews, for often contradictory resons. The solution to bad speech is better speech. Shaming anti semites won't do anything to changes their minds. Ther...

Re: What is the Dark Night of the Soul in Buddhist terms?

These two things are not the same. They can exist at the same time, or just one of them, or neither.... The "dark night" is quite similar to the grieving process associated with the death of a loved one, or with knowing that you have a deadly illness. Except this grief is not brought about by the d...

Re: What is the Dark Night of the Soul in Buddhist terms?

The Dark Night, in the buddhist context , refers to a phase in a vipassana meditator's practice when the meditator can be filled with feelings of dread, fear, anger, depression, worry, and so on. There's already a term that covers that: samvega. The question is, insofar "samvega" and "the dark nigh...

Re: What is the Dark Night of the Soul in Buddhist terms?

What is the Dark Night of the Soul in Buddhist terms? What mental state is this? It has to do with insights into unsatisfactoriness. One of the ways of describing the progress of insight is taught in this short dhamma treasure by Mahasi Sayadaw: https://www.accesstoinsight.org/lib/authors/mahasi/pr...

As I see it his main contribution to the world was the spreading of materialist-scientism which is founded on wrong view. Physics is wrong view? Would you care to elaborate. Also, why call his work scientism? He was a "real" scientist and was the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge .. an...

I don't think we should praise him because he was famous & well-liked & is now dead. I think you should not praise him if you see nothing to praise in him. 4th and 5th fetters are destroyed by attaining fruit of non-returning, which is based on jhana. No jhana alone by itself can destroy fetters.
Why is non returning based on jhana? I've read that before, but I don't understand why jhana is specifically emphasised for non returning.

Re: Nihilism has poisoned modern society; as Buddhists, we should reject it.

Hello. Stephen Hicks wrote an excelent book about postmodernism, focused on its political and philosophical components, rather than its artistic component. The audiobook version is freely available on youtube and on the author's website. Chapter 1 gives a good summary, but I'll link to the whole boo...
