4th and 5th fetters are destroyed by attaining fruit of non-returning, which is based on jhana. No jhana alone by itself can destroy fetters.
Why is non returning based on jhana? I've read that before, but I don't understand why jhana is specifically emphasised for non returning.

Re: Criticism of Islam

Its a shame that anyone who brings up any rational criticism of Islamic teachings gets silenced by getting names called upon such as 'neo-conservative' Hi Dharmasherab Do you have an example of someone calling you (or someone else) a 'neo-conservative' because of their "rational criticism of Islami...

Re: Nihilism has poisoned modern society; as Buddhists, we should reject it.

Hello. Stephen Hicks wrote an excelent book about postmodernism, focused on its political and philosophical components, rather than its artistic component. The audiobook version is freely available on youtube and on the author's website. Chapter 1 gives a good summary, but I'll link to the whole boo...

Re: Negative feelings after meditating on Anicca

This is what happens when one starts not with things he should start with. Hello, Zom. Your answer is a bit vague. Can you please clarify? I've been listening to Ayya Khema lately. She advises to practice insight after (sutta) jhana. She lays out the insights that one can gain in post jhana contemp...

Re: How to reach the 1st Jhana?

How to do it? Read and follow this book . It has been highly effective for me. Please bear in mind this is something that will require dedicated daily practice, with sessions of 45 minutes minimum , and continual mindfulness throughout the day. Thank you Pseudo :) This book not goes against Bouddha...

Re: Nihilism has poisoned modern society; as Buddhists, we should reject it.

Perhaps it is. There are some moral rules on which there is no consensus, such as euthanasia. But others seem objectively true, or at least unobjectionable. For example, "One should not torture people for no other purpose than sadism". This seems to be objectively true, at least as objective as mora...

Re: Diversity among mods

I personally don't think the Abidhamma was originated as is traditionally believed. The difference between a buddhist and a nonbuddhist is that a nonbuddhist has no realistic place for reasonable doubt, while a buddhist has space for reasonable doubt that the story might be true.

Re: My experience with jhana and samadhi, comments welcome

So, as you may or may not know, Anapanasati, Satipatthana, samatha, Vipassana are taught in Theraveda, Mahāyāna, and Vajrayana programs. So what I was taught in the mindfulness practices in Thich Nhat Hanhs organization was simply samatha, and after about ten years of doing it I took it out and won...

Re: Nihilism has poisoned modern society; as Buddhists, we should reject it.

Hello. Thank you for this topic as it is one of the things that interests me the most at the moment. It occured to me recently that I should abstain from wrong view just as I would abstain from lying. Wrong views are not just innocent opinions, even when there is a case to be made for some wrong vie...

the reason diversity is so important is that each race and gender has certain positive and otherwise attributes that they can bring to the table that a member of another race or gender might not even be aware of, its not about equality, its about welcoming diverse and differing viewpoints into the ...

Re: question regarding not-self of volition and conscious action

Hello, Jaysus. It seems that the process of arising and falling of volition is too fast for your current ability to concentrate. So a first sugestion would be to cultivate concentration to be able to discern the process clearly. I do not have that clear discernment, but I have thought about it. To m...

Re: Righteous Anger

It is said righteous anger is the most dangerous kind of anger for a spiritual practitioner. This is because it involves all 3 poisons: greed (desire), hatred (anger), and delusion (wrong view). I used to be very attached to political views and I found my spiritual practice went nowhere until I loo...

Yes I agree, great app! Computers and tablets are amazing these days eh.
Unfortunately the app just increased my appreciation for the miracle that is the human body, and was not useful for asubha at all.
That's hilarious!

Thanks for the app, Stiphan.

Re: How to teach children to think for themselves?

Greetings. From another thread: Frankly, I can think of a lot of things that should be taught in schools before religion even comes into the curriculum. It's better to teach kids how to think for themselves, and give them the analytical tools to let them choose their own views and beliefs, rather t...

Here we go again, with the famous / infamous Jews hiding in the attic scenario. "Don't lie when Nazis come asking for jews to murder", I think that's a very one sided view of the situation. It only considers the kamma made from lying and doesn't consider all the kamma being made. It ignor...

Hello, SarathW. (The TL;DR is in bold ) Truth is medicine for the mind. When you go to the doctor you should be correctly diagnosed. If the doctor misdiagnoses you, he won't be able to treat you, not matter how much we wants to cure you. If a doctor cures a misdiagnosed patient it will be a lucky ac...

I'm sorry, but I have to point out that this is dangerously wrong. Nazis were swimming in lies. Lies about jews. Lies about "race". Lies about their "race". Lies about the history of their "race". Lies about history in general. Nazis were not merely interpreting the facts in a different way. They w...
