Re: In Praise of Pain

AN 4.123 appears to say attachment to jhana results in rebirth in hell. There is the case where an individual, withdrawn from sensuality, withdrawn from unskillful qualities, enters & remains in the first jhana: rapture & pleasure born from withdrawal, accompanied by directed thought & evaluation. ...

Re: What is Sat Satiya?

What is Sat Satiya? It appears Buddha after his enlightenment, spent seven weeks evaluating his Dharma for seven weeks. What is the Sutta reference or any other link to describe this event? "Atthasaliní" says that the Buddha sat in the "Jewel House", in the north west direction, and contemplated th...

.) And... I don't know any bad monks. I know monks who handle money, and monks who break almost every precept up to but not including the sanghadisesas. But I don't know any bad monks. the usual pali word applying to such monks is alajji - unconscientious or shameless. in a sense they are like the ...

Re: Is there no contradiction here?

Also the commentary to Majjihma Nikaya Sutta 26 (p1217 of Bodhi's translation). The Atthakatha raises the question of why after countless aeons of striving to become a Buddha who could teach the Dhamma he now had such thoughts. The answer is that it was only now, after becoming a Buddha that he real...

Re: Is there no contradiction here?

On the one hand, after enlightenment, Buddha doubted for several weeks whether to preach the dharma(? He didnt doubt for "several weeks". He expounded Dhamma because there were beings with 'little dust in their eyes', who could comprehend. https://books.google.com.kw/books?id=OLWh1MMg_JQC&pg=PA117&...

I can't recall another occasion of any member being caught doing this, probably because it is so egregious. edit: of course it is perfectly fine to point out disgreements with any translations. From nina van gorkom Dhamma at the Foundation, Dec 1 ’18, No 2. Acharn:If there is not enough foundation knowledge one may take pañña of the level of pariyatti for right awareness, for vipassana. After being told that seeing is nama and visible object is rupa and then practise vipassana, that is imp...

But there are accounts of overestimating one's arahantship (may be also other fruits). If reviewing knowledge appears in each case, how would this be possible?
A sotapanna (for example) would never imagine he was a Anagami, but a putthujana could think he was anything.

A new article by thanissaro that is a response to the criticism he's received by bhikkhu Analayo and Brahmali for denying the validity of bhikkhuni ordination. https://www.dhammatalks.org/vinaya/TrojanHorse.html From the above link: Part V contains what I feel are the most serious issues in this ar...

Re: Can a sotāpanna committ suicide?

what I would like to know, is if there is some kind of Saul of Tarsus moment when you are blinded by the light of stream entry and you actually know it yourself. I do know the Abhidhammic prescription but it doesn't tell you if you are aware of it. The monk (or layman) may not know exactly how much...

Re: Sujin Boriharnwanaket: quotes

Dhamma talk at Foundation, Nov 24. no 1.translated by nina van gorkom sujin: Just to understand that all realities are dhamma is not enough, it has to be now. Khanda: past, present, future . Khanda is what arises and falls away. The Buddha often spoke about upadana-khandha, khanda of grasping. Q: do...
