Re: Translators views

If so why he keep publishing with Wisdom? Huh, that's a good question. I hadn't thought of that. I know when he started he went with Wisdom Publications because they were pretty much the only publisher who was interested. Back then there wasn't much of a recognised market for English translations o...

Re: Translators views

I'm happy with the Bhikkhu Bodhi's translations. Unfortunately, these translations are commercial. I hope that Bhikkhu Bodhi someday makes his work freely available. Bhikkhu Bodhi said he wants to make them freely available to everyone, but unfortunately the copyright is now owned by Wisdom Publica...

Re: Ajahn Chandako to James - Transition to Laylife

I didn´t know him, but he seems like a very charismatic leader and genuinenly optimistic and cheerful person. Yes, he is, until you live with him at his monastery. Then you would see why people generally departed, never to return. There are more than 8 nice cabins on the monastery, but no other mon...

Re: Ajahn Chandako to James - Transition to Laylife

thanks for this. I don't know who this monk/lay person is, and I'm always interested in how/why senior monastics choose to disrobe. His behaviour had been declining for a long time. You can read more context in the letter which was released publically a few years ago, when he was asked to permanent...

Re: Movie like monastery?

There should be a digital magazine dedicated to taking pictures of theravada monasteries and provide their basic info, weather, location, square feet, capacity, etc. Because the info is so scattered and hard to find. Im just saying haha :D :D That would be really cool. Fun project too, if you're a ...

Re: Movie like monastery?

Abhyagiri Monastery in Northern California (Theravada) has a very beautiful setting, in the mountains with great mountain trails, natural beauty. https://gallery.abhayagiri.org/_data/i/upload/2021/12/06/20211206184738-5c5fe472-xx.jpg This is not the monastery, I'm sure you know? This is Yosemite, a...

I also suggest asking on Suttacentral. They have some nuns there who are happy to answer questions like this. https://discourse.suttacentral.net/

He Jack. Make sure you take a watch or clock, so you can turn off your phone and give the SIM card to someone else who will give it back to you AFTER THE RETREAT.
Internet and communication destroys retreats for yourself. It is the best invention for keeping people in samsara.

Re: Daibutsu Kaikoku (1934) THE BUDDHA AS A GIANT KAIJU! The Great Buddha Arrival (大佛廻國, Daibutsu Kaikoku)

That's cool. I often have a daydream during meditation, of the huge metal Buddha coming to life at the front of the dhamma hall, and walking straight through the wall, tearing through the wood like it was paper. It's a pretty Buddha, but I don't want it to come to life like a hideous steel golem.

Re: sutta jhana and vipassana jhana

You need to clarify what you mean by Vipassana jhana. There are three things called by "jhana"... Sutta Jhana, Vipassana jhana, and also visuddhimagga/commentarial jhana.

Your can remove Wat Marp Jan from your list. They strongly support commentarial interpretation and ignore the early texts when they conflict with the way tradition and commentary says things should be done.

Please list several examples where the BMC is incorrect and your version is correct. It will help this discussion to have some examples.

Re: How can lay people lessen our obsession with sensual pleasure?

When you meditate, aware of pleasant and unpleasant sensations and feeling tones, you practice not reacting and accepting both pleasant and unpleasant with equanimity. You continue doing this for days and weeks and months and years, many thousands of times. And eventually you train yourself to not r...
