Perhaps learning how to make vinegar out of it would be the most useful thing as was suggested before.
That way there is no waste of time, effort and whatever the intention of the original gift giver, something useful would arise.

Yeah, making wine vinegar actually sounds fun. I might just give that a try. What are your thoughts on cooking with wine? For example, adding 1/2 cup to a recipe. Personally, I don't have a big problem, but not sure 100% what the Buddha would have thought.

What am I suppose to do in the future when my family asks me to pick up a bottle of wine for family get-togethers? I feel like complying isn't in the spirit of the Dhamma, but at the same time I'd feel awkward to refuse the request.

You can cook it as sauce of lamb, beef, etc.

Because alcohol will leave out wine, while you cook it on a fire.

Well, I ate some dessert with alcohol in it over the holidays and it definitely wasn't cooked out, since it was soaked in the cake. Does that count as breaking the precepts? I didn't think it was a big deal, because kids in kindergarten were eating some of it too. It would have been awkward to refuse during the holiday dinner.

Maybe if you follow a strict interpretation of precepts, it broke it. But IMO, you're not breaking it unless you're eating food cooked with it and experiencing a noticeable effect on your mental function. You'd have to be a glutton or the person making the food used way too much alcohol for this to happen. I've eaten a gluttonous amount of tiramisu cake, which had alcohol in it, without feeling anything.

If you were crazy strict, you'd have to avoid ripe fruit. There are almost certainly many molecules of ethanol in there. All that is required for natural ethanol production is the right environment: the necessary microorganisms, sugar, and time.

why don't you save it, so you can give it back to him as a present when the occation arise ?
I suppose it is not bad karma to present it back :).

I'm not sure how the vinegar is turning out. It's been 7 days with one batch and I haven't noticed a difference. I think it's suppose to develop some sort of film on top, but haven't seen it yet. It did say it could take up to 10 days or something like that. Hopefully it'll turn out.
