Hi,
Anyone know which Sutta in Tipitaka that contains about the story or reference about Sumedha ascetic's resolution to become a Buddha under Dipankara Buddha's time?
Reference of Sumedha and Dipankara Buddha in Sutta (?)
Re: Reference of Sumedha and Dipankara Buddha in Sutta (?)
There is no such sutta. Those buddhas are mentioned in Buddhavamsa, a later work, included in Khuddaka Nikaya.

You can also find a reference to other Buddhas in the Mahāpadāna Sutta of the Dīghanikāya. Vipassī Buddha arose 91 aeons ago, as did Dīpaṅkara who is not mentioned in that Sutta, but is mentioned in the Commentary on the Mahāsatipaṭṭhāna Sutta.
Mahāpadāna Suttaṃ wrote: “Ito so, bhikkhave, ekanavutikappe yaṃ Vipassī Bhagavā arahaṃ sammāsambuddho loke udapādi. Ito so, bhikkhave, ekatiṃse kappe yaṃ sikhī Bhagavā arahaṃ sammāsambuddho loke udapādi. Tasmiññeva kho, bhikkhave, ekatiṃse kappe vessabhū Bhagavā arahaṃ sammāsambuddho loke udapādi. Imasmiññeva kho, bhikkhave, bhaddakappe Kakusandho Bhagavā arahaṃ sammāsambuddho loke udapādi. Imasmiññeva kho, bhikkhave, bhaddakappe Koṇāgamano Bhagavā arahaṃ sammāsambuddho loke udapādi. Imasmiññeva kho, bhikkhave, bhaddakappe Kassapo Bhagavā arahaṃ sammāsambuddho loke udapādi. Imasmiññeva kho, bhikkhave, bhaddakappe ahaṃ etarahi arahaṃ sammāsambuddho loke uppanno.

the Buddhavamsa is part of the sutta pitaka, not a later work.Zom wrote:There is no such sutta. Those buddhas are mentioned in Buddhavamsa, a later work, included in Khuddaka Nikaya.

Here's a list of the Twenty-Eight Buddhas on Wikipedia. If anyone finds any more, please let me know
This is the Classical Theravāda forum, so whatever it says in the Tipiṭaka should be taken as authoritative, including what it says in the Kesamutti Sutta.
I am a bit puzzled by what it says in my quote above about Vipassī Buddha living 91 aeons ago (ekanavutikappe). According to the list of twenty-eight, and the four Buddhas mentioned in the Mahāsatipaṭṭhāna Sutta Commentary, Vipassī was not one of those born in the Era of Dīpaṅkara.
Such details are of little consequence, or course, but perhaps some scholars could shed some light on other sources for the Chronology.
