Access to Insight going static in January

Post by xinuflux »

The homepage of accesstoinsight.org mentions it is no longer going to be updated when John Bullitt retires. Does anyone know why a handoff or open-sourcing of the site isn't planned?

I don't know why there isn't a hand-off, but I can think of one possible reason. He may be wanting to protect the site, ensuring it keeps its current focus. A new admin might change the whole focus; or in a worst-case scenario, delete the whole site.

I have thought about the same with the Dhamma Wiki I run. I might make it static too and I imagine like access to insight by that time it should be fairly complete anyway. I might pass it to a bhikkhu or bhikkhuni or just leave it static.

There is enough great info on access to insight to keep us going back there for many years, perhaps decades.

When an author finishes a book it becomes static........this does not preclude some other author from writing one.......isn't all the material on Accesstoinsight free for the copying and couldn't anyone use it as the core for the epilogue of a new book?

Presumably this would permit any interested party to start a new website containing all of ATI's material, but which would still be open to new content.

Maybe we could get several monks to memorize Accesstoinsight's contents and pass it on as an oral tradition........Dhammanando?

No, I don't think I'm the man for the job, Chownah. My memory's been deteriorating in recent years, and in any case, only a rather small proportion of the translations there are agreeable to me.

To me it's no great loss for it to stay as it is. It's been fairly static for a while now.

It's certainly a useful collection of articles and suttas, and it was well ahead of other projects for a long time. However, there is now a huge amount of on-line information. In particular:
  • 1. BPS, where many of the ATI articles were sourced from, now has an excellent site: http://www.bps.lk/.
    2. Sutta Central now not only cross-references ATI and Mettanet Suttas, but also has many of Bhikku Bodhi's (and some other translators') translations: http://suttacentral.net/ (Unfortunately, the footnotes are not reproduced, but it's wonderful to have those high-quality translations freely available.)

Does anyone know if Thanissaro Bhikkhu keeps translating? Is he published somewhere else now?
