Hi All
Not a Buddhist topic as such, but one that has implications for millions of Buddhists, something that I think we should find ways to promote.

The SRI Method of rice production not only produces more food but also uses less chemicals including pesticides - see this link for some of the implication for Thailand and by logical extension - Burma, Cambodia, Vietnam and India

Better way to farm rice
Re: Better way to farm rice

In reading the scriptures, there are two kinds of mistakes:
One mistake is to cling to the literal text and miss the inner principles.
The second mistake is to recognize the principles but not apply them to your own mind, so that you waste time and just make them into causes of entanglement.

Re: Better way to farm rice
I'm an organic farmer in Thailand. My farm is small....about 12 rai which is about 5 acres which is about 2 hectare. I grow rice using mostly organic methods and my wife grows rice using chemical fertilizers. We grow only a small crop mostly for us and her family to eat....we sell the small surplus. We use no poison with the exception of one application on the young rice plants before they are transplanted out into the field. My wife and I together grow only about one rai of rice. In the past we used most of the rest of the land for pasture for cows and a small portion for vegetables and fruits. We no longer keep cows and I am in the process of expanding the vegetable and fruit production and will probably increase the amount of rice too.
I am familiar with SRI. There is a lot of overlap between their methods and mine. I have spent a lot of time learning about the science behind farming (both chemical and organic).
I could go on and on......and on and on.......but won't. If you have questions I will answer as best I can and admit when I don't know or am only guessing.
