Letters written between a meditation master and his student.

Post by upekha »

For those who may be interested, there is a website which has these letters written between the former Meethirigala head priest, Ven, Matara Sri Gnanarama thero and a pupil of his. These letters cover her experiences and the advise the Thero gives her to progress upto Anagami level.

You can access them in the blog. They appear in numerical order, and you have to click on the older posts to read them all.

That was extremely interesting, thanks!

If you didn't care
What happened to me
And I didn't care for you

We would zig-zag our way
Through the boredom and pain
Occasionally glancing up through the rain

Wondering which of the
Buggers to blame
And watching for pigs on the wing

I find the letters very helpful in the sense that if I am stuck in my meditation, I would find the page that refers to the stage of meditation I am at, and read up on the priest's advice and go on from there. It has helped me time and time again.

Dear Dayika,

The Venerable Nayaka Thero has received your letter of the 9th instant. He agrees with you in your analysis of the 4 Arupa Jhanas, from the practical point of view.As such you need not entertain any doubts as to ' how to proceed ' . He was also appreciative of your experience of the 'Phala' through the higher level of Samadhi you have now attained.

Best wishes for your progress.

I checked with my photo copied book and yes, it does end with Letter 104.

It is usually said that one can't attain Arahath maga pala as a lay person, and as at that time
( during the 1980s) there was no Bikkuni Sasana in Sri Lanka, she may have not progressed beyond Anagami level. This maybe the reason the letters stop at that point.
