Social Contagion

Post by Sylvester »

"Monks, there are these two conditions for the arising of wrong view. Which two? The voice of another and inappropriate attention. These are the two conditions for the arising of wrong view."

Compare the "voice of another" with a recently observed and measured social contagion at work -

What other social contagions are at work?

Next thing they are going to say clapping is a disease, like they're saying obesity is, and alcoholism.(joke)
18 years ago I made one of the most important decisions of my life and entered a local Cambodian Buddhist Temple as a temple boy and, for only 3 weeks, an actual Therevada Buddhist monk. I am not a scholar, great meditator, or authority on Buddhism, but Buddhism is something I love from the Bottom of my heart. It has taught me sobriety, morality, peace, and very importantly that my suffering is optional, and doesn't have to run my life. I hope to give back what little I can to the Buddhist community, sincerely former monk John

It's a poor translation of "Parato ca ghoso ayoniso ca manasikāro."

Better would be "The utterance of another and inappropriate attention."

Certainly looks like a clap trap. :stirthepot:

People are social beings, and are very strongly influenced by peer pressure. The Asch Experiment was designed to test it.

That may be why seclusion is recommended for the development of wisdom.

Then we can have a new (yet old) social contagion - apphoṭanaghosa - the sound of clapping.

How about rioting associated with football matches. Men watching football in small numbers never seem to exhibit much violence but get a stadium full of men and they sometimes run amok.
