Good old Ian

If you didn't care
What happened to me
And I didn't care for you

We would zig-zag our way
Through the boredom and pain
Occasionally glancing up through the rain

Wondering which of the
Buggers to blame
And watching for pigs on the wing

I just finished reading Anathem, by Neal Stephenson. It is speculative science fiction, mostly depicting individuals who live in monasteries for scientific & philosophical research who end up responding to a world crisis, written in first-person perspective.

In the book, sometimes scientific proofs and philosophical points are put to music, something akin to a splice of Gregorian and Buddhist chanting. The link below was created with this in mind, and forms something of a supplement to the book. While it isn't great music on the face of things, I appreciate supportive world-building such as this - at ~930 pages, it was a thoroughly thought-provoking read; the plot was sketched out by the author when he wrote an article which briefly covered the history of metaphysics.

So, here you go: music from a book.

  • "And how is it, bhikkhus, that by protecting oneself one protects others? By the pursuit, development, and cultivation of the four establishments of mindfulness. It is in such a way that by protecting oneself one protects others.

"And how is it, bhikkhus, that by protecting others one protects oneself? By patience, harmlessness, goodwill, and sympathy. It is in such a way that by protecting others one protects oneself.

That reminds me of something I read many years ago ... possibly Hermann Hesse's Glass Bead Game? Anyone else got any ideas?

Your linked music is sort of sub-Philip Glass ... try Kundun for the real thing:
