Hello.
Recently there was a thread about the PTS releasing the sutta pitaka, but I couldn't find it, so sorry about creating a new thread. But it's worth it.
I contacted the owner of the site below, Mr Olds, to know if there was a downloadable version of the PTS texts. He responded immediatly and, in a blink of an eye, was kind enough to put an enormous portion of the sutta pitaka on the web, in an easily downloadable format. The only volumes missing are the 3 volumes of the middla lenght discourses and the volume 5 of the angutara nikaya. He says that if anyone has these PTS volumes digitaly available to please send them to him for it to be available to the public.
The kuddhaka nikaya is the only one that will not be available, since, as I understood it, the PTS hasn't made it available for free.
So here it is! http://obo.genaud.net/backmatter/indexe ... m#pts_pdfs
Be well
PS: He also says that an offline version of the site, just as the access to insight dot org, will be made in CD format.

Thanks for sharing that.,
It would be also helpful to have digital version of Vinaya Pitaka in English.

It was my pleasure, Bhante.
Just to make it clear the PTS released the sutta pitaka (except for the kuddhaka nikaya) for free. It is permited to copy and redistribute, as long as nothing is charged, not even the printing costs, or mailing costs. All comercial rights are still held by PTS.

Re: Downloadable Sutta Pitaka (almost complete)
Apparently, from what I understood, the Vinaya was also released by the Pali Text Society. So mr. Olds, the owner of the site I linked in the first post, requests that if anyone has a digital version of the Vinaya, as translated by the PTS, to please send it to him, to be available for download in the site.
Meanwhile, he has already scanned the volumes I and III of the middle lenght discourses and uploaded them. They should be available this week on the site. So he says he doesn't need a version of these volumes anymore. He is currently scanning volume II of the middla lenght discourses and the volume 5 of the gradual sayings.
I will be updating soon.
Be well.

The volumes are already available. So all the Nikayas, except for the Kuddhaka, are legaly available for download for free, at the site

Thank you, PTS and thank you mr. Olds.
Maybe some mod could make this sticky, or create a new sticky thread with this information.
I hope that in a few months, the Vinaya will be available.
Be well

Re: Downloadable Sutta Pitaka (almost complete)
Ran across this thread and wanted to download the files for my computer. Unfortunately, when I try to download any of the zip files I get this error:
Not Found
The requested URL /resources/dhamma-vinaya/pts/dn/dialogues1.zip was not found on this server.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
Has something happened to the site recently, or is it possibly something faulty on my end?

The site owner explasined that they are having a technical problem. But try again in 12 hours or 24 hours and it should be all there.

Re: Downloadable Sutta Pitaka (almost complete)
Bhante Nyanasuci, all
I was informed by the same person that a large portion of the Vinaya, as translated by the PTS is available here:
http://www.sacred-texts.com/bud/index.htm#south
It includes the Patimokkha, the Mahavagga and the Kullavagga. I hope it helps.
Meanwhile, the request still stands: if anyone has the PDFs of the Vinaya volumes, please get in contact with the owner of the site in the first post and send them to him. If anyone is willing, please do the scans. If more than one person do it, it would be better to synchronise efforts, so please discuss it here.
Be well

And thank you MP for providing this link!
I have added it to the Theravadin Resource guide here:

And also to Dhamma Wiki:

Re: Downloadable Sutta Pitaka (almost complete)
Great resource. The downloads are working fine for me, but not all the PTS discourses seem to be linked and available on the site itself under "sutta indexes". Is this the case for everybody else?

Re: Downloadable Sutta Pitaka (almost complete)
Greetings,
Mr. Snyder: Thank you for the link, but the visible part is a little misleading. We are not the Pali Text Society. Suggest: Pali Text Society Translations downloads or anything you like that doesn't imply that we represent the PTS.
Coyote: The primary function of the site propper is to provide resources to compare translations; most particularly my own with those of the PTS and others. Not all suttas by any means have been put up on the site, but a great number, in the thousands by some counts, are in fact available. Every effort was made to have multiple translations for each Bhk. Thanissaro translation. We would have had Bhk. Bodhi's translations as well if it were not for copyright restrictions.
While I am at it, let me draw reader's attention to the distinguishing features of the translations that are on the site: they have been formatted to bring out the meaning intended by the translator; they have been, for the most part, fully expanded (inserting those sections represented by ...pe... (and this for both the Pali and the translation) and finally, the suttas are linked to the Pali and to the other suttas that are available so that alternate versions are just a click away.
For an essay on why the free and easily obtainable Pali Text Society translations are so important, please read:
http://obo.genaud.net/dhammatalk/dhamma ... ce_pts.htm
There is an effort by the site administrator to coordinate the proofreading and formatting of the whole of the PTS translations that are available, but this is a project that will likely take many months or even years to complete. For that project visit:
http://www.genaud.net
One other point: There are two different versions of the Vinaya Pitaka available: The six volume Horner translation and the partial translation of Rhys Davids and Oldenberg.

... actually what would be REALLY great is to have digital version of Vinaya translated by Horner. I am sure that is going to happen one day, and when it does, please do let me know.
