Early Buddhist Theory of Knowledge, by K.N. Jayatilleke

David Kalupahana, a student of Jayatilleke, expanded on a theme of empirical knowledge found in the Sabbasutta (SN. 35.23), with comparison to Nikāya and Āgama versions, not cited in Jayatilleke's work:

A Tract on Empiricism, by D.J. Kalupahana: Philosophy East and West, Vol. 19, No. 1 (Jan., 1969) pp.. 65-67

I was having problems with the above copy of 'Early Buddhist Theory of Knowledge" so here is another one from scribd...

http://www.scribd.com/doc/106810442/K-N ... -Knowledge
"I don't envision a single thing that, when developed & cultivated, leads to such great benefit as the mind. The mind, when developed & cultivated, leads to great benefit."

"I don't envision a single thing that, when undeveloped & uncultivated, brings about such suffering & stress as the mind. The mind, when undeveloped & uncultivated, brings about suffering & stress."

Mauryan India by G. M. Bongard-Levin

First published in Russian in 1973, the author incorporated some scholarly feedback for the 1985 English edition, which I'm in the process of reading.

---

Roughly, the book explores from ~600BCE to ~200BCE, with a broad discussion of surrounding social contexts throughout.
"And how is it, bhikkhus, that by protecting oneself one protects others? By the pursuit, development, and cultivation of the four establishments of mindfulness. It is in such a way that by protecting oneself one protects others.

"And how is it, bhikkhus, that by protecting others one protects oneself? By patience, harmlessness, goodwill, and sympathy. It is in such a way that by protecting others one protects oneself.
- Sedaka Sutta [SN 47.19]
