vīriya (viiriya) or viriya?

Post by frank k »

The pali dictionary says viriya.
Looking up on DPR with both Thai and Burmese tipitaka, thai says "viriya", burmese says "vīriya".
Using right effort definition from sn 45.8:
chandaṃ janeti vāyamati vīriyaṃ ārabhati

For the sutta chant, http://www.audtip.org/home/sn/sn45/sn45-008
Ven. Jiiv., reading from the Sri Lankan BJT text pronounces as "viriya".

Is this a typo in the Burmese tipitaka?

in PED, "vīra" defined as manly, mighty heroic, a hero, also it notes "cp viriya". (what does cp mean? And where can I get a table of explanations for the alphabet soup of acronyms in PED and CPD?)

Hi Frank,

Both forms occur.

thanks Dmytro for the alphabet soup pages .
I've copied those CPD and PED acronyms into an epub file for offline reference.

(it's a file at bottom of the page)

So one can interchangeably use viriya and vīriya in any context, without any confusion? There's no reason why one should be preferred other the others? Are there are other important or common pali words for which this happens, that we should be aware of?

I don't know of such a reason.

Similar slight changes happen with too many words, especially in the later texts.

Among the most important ones is "upekhā/upekkhā".
