Hi

My wife is Faeng. No I haven't been to the Chinese Temple in Rayong yet, another good place to visit. School has just finished and we are moving house. The in-Laws came round today and we went to the beach together.

All the best for now.

Getting back to the topic ...
A book about the symbolism of wats (What's What in a Wat by Carol Stratton http://www.amazon.com/Whats-What-Wat-Bu ... 9749511999) mentions that figures of Guan Yin are appearing more often in Thai temples these days.
I think this statue must represent her. I saw it in Wat Bupparam in Chiang Mai, placed to one side of the main Buddha images but still quite large and quite prominent.

Hi, Yawares,
This is beautiful. It was discussed on another thread sometime ago and this version of it - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OE-jPFqv ... re=related seems to be the original. It is a bit longer and the music fits better.

Guan-Yin, THE GODDESS OF METTA

Post by GraemeR »

Hi

I went a Chinese Temple in Rayong, with a large Guan Yin statue last night.

My wife wanted to dedicate some Feng Shui mirrors.

I don't really understand quite what happened, but it was a mixture of Tao and Buddhist ceremony. Two men with a forked stick traced Chinese letters with a forked stick, another dictated them, a third who recorded them. These gave answers to people's questions.

From what I could gather, a representative of the 8 Immortals was interceding to give the answers: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eight_Immortals" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

They gave a blessing for new cars, motorbikes, statues for household shrines and Feng Shui items.

Does anyone know any more about this sort of ceremony?

Dear Graham,
What is Feng Shui mirrors??....Oh I've been to 3 Guan-Yin temples BUT never witness anything that you described
When I was young, I went to Chinese temple with my Chinese friend( his parents rented a place that belonged to my family as his dry-cleaning shop), he wanted Green Cadillac  , so he bought a Cadillac car toy and put it in front of Guan-Yin and made his wish.

NO...Yee (my childhood friend) 's wish never came true

After her death, the families of many fishermen and sailors began to pray to Mazu in honour of her acts of courage in trying to save those at sea. Worship of her spread quickly. Much of her popularity in comparison to other sea deities resulted from her role as a compassionate motherly protector in contrast to authoritarian father figures like the Dragon Kings. However Mazu is unique as she is portrayed as both an authoritative deity and a compassionate being. She is usually depicted wearing a red robe, and sitting on a throne.
