Medics await half a million for monk's cremation

By The Nation (newspaper)

UDON THANI -- The Public Health Ministry has prepared 500 doctors and nurses, a field hospital, 20 ambulances and three helicopters to support some half a million people expected to attend the cremation of Luangta Maha Bua Yannasampanno on Saturday.

The teams will provide free medical treatment at Wat Ban Tad, where the revered monk served as abbot, until March 7.
Deputy Public Health Minister Pansiri Kulanartsiri said the ministry had recruited 500 doctors and nurses from various hospitals to work in nine medical tents and 100 small mobile medical units.
At nearby Ban Tad School, a 10-bed field hospital has been set up with four emergency medical teams and specialists, though Central Udon Thani Hospital will take most patients.

Today on the 12th August is the commemoration of Luangta Maha Boowa's 100th birthday anniversary, which happens to coincide with Mothers Day in Thailand (which is the queen's birthday).

They have been busy laying the foundations for a big memorial cetiya of Luangta at Phu Pha Daeng monastery in Udorn Thani as well.

On the 15th August, Luangta's younger sister Khun Mae Jundee -- who has been living at his monastery for a long time and was highly respected as well -- passed away:

Khun Mae Jundee, the younger sister of Luangta Maha Boowa, who has been living as an Upasika at Wat Pah Ban Tad and respected as a teacher figure, has passed away on the 15th August 2013 and cremated. Some people have already proclaimed her to be an ariya-savika and some forest monks have even said that puthujjana monks can bow to an unordained ariya person like this. Others, however, strongly oppose it with reference to the Vinaya rule that prohibits the bowing or paying respect to women. This has now become a bit of an issue and it shows that in Thailand, individual charisma (parami) can sometimes override the male/female distinction.

(They do the same "asking for forgiveness" ceremony as they would with a senior monk, offering a tray with flowers and using the formula "Mahatheri pamadena..." instead. She then gives the usual blessing like a senior monk would do.)
