Bhikkhu Analayo's Lectures on the Madhyama-āgama

Post by mikenz66 »

This page conveniently collects references to Ven. Analyo's three lecture series comparing the Madhyama-āgama with the Pali Canon.

While the focus here is comparative, there are plenty of interesting comments about the Pali suttas, such as the comments on jhana pointed out here by polarbear101:

I like Ven Analyo's lectures. They are the same sort of calm, careful, detailed, analyses and Q&A as the lectures by Bhikkhu Bodhi (who was one of his mentors):

Bhikhu Analayo is inspiring because he is able to combine prolific academic work with extensive meditation practice. I believe he works 3 days a week, and dedicates 4 days a week to meditation. Those are great classes and not just academic. There are nuggets of Analayo's own style of practice scattered through out. He is an entertaining teacher, too.

These two books he wrote are some of the best resources available for practical meditation based on the pali canon/agamas in my opinion.

Compassion and Emptiness in Early Buddhist Meditation - title is misleading, this is about all the BrahmaViharas including Metta.

Yes, and he's very modest about all of it, which makes listening to his talks such a pleasure, and makes him so worthy of respect in my opinion. There's never any sense that he's trying to put down other viewpoints.

Yes, he has that great quality. He is very careful to say that his findings don't devalue other practices but that he just is adding some historical context.

I would say that the Theravada tradition as a whole is lucky to have someone of his caliber doing the work that he doing. It is brilliant.

Thanks. Unfortunately the books of the full text of translation of the MA are still in copyright (I believe he was an editor, not the primary translator) but those SA ones are freely available.

All of Bhikkhu Analayo's books and articles are linked here:
https://www.buddhismuskunde.uni-hamburg ... alayo.html
Many, even books, are freely downloadable, but he seems to have an agreement with the publishers that some will only be freely available after a few years. The books comparing the MA with the Pali are available.

Does anyone here know at what time he left the Goenka-camp? I do know that he used to be a teacher there, at least permitted to teach 30 day courses (not so sure about 45 days). Today he seems to be associated with the IMS.
I can just confirm that he can be funny and very serious at the same time. He has quite a strong german "Ruhrgebiets"-dialect, and I had great moments listening to that highly developed meditation switching to German for a moment. Immediately reminds me of my parents, they must come from a similar area. He seems to be a kind of Arahat of Wanne-Eickel. ^^
I think his comparative studies also raised a lot of attention outside of Theravāda studies. Even in the Mahāyāna-camp he is well-known and respected. Yet he remains faithful to the Pāli tradition. Some people say he has a slight tendency to 'over-validify' difficult passages in favour of the traditional wording (some kind of a counter-extreme to people such as Gregory Schopen), but that's quite understandable given the fact that he sees himself as a practitioner of the Theravāda tradition in the first place. Also his approach to the doctrinal (non-)developments within the lifetime of the Buddha is something that quite a few scholars would put into question, yet I neither have the knowledge nor the ability to judge about any of these points.

Dear The Thinker, and all dhamma friends,

Thank you for showing the website of Bhikkhu Analayo's recent article 'Agama and Anga in the Early Buddhist Oral Tradition'.

Having read the article, I found that Analayo does not mention entirely about the three-anga structure (corrections) of the Chinese Samyukta-agama (and its Pali counterpart Samyutta-nikaya) (indicated by Choong Mun-keat's book and article mentioned also in the Analayo's article, p. 33)!

It seems his argument about the three angas found in both MN (Mahasunnata-sutta) and Madhyama-agama (pp. 22-4) is not only 'not up-to-date', but also completely unreasonable! Why Analayo does not comment on the findings: the three-anga structure of Samyukta-agama? The findings are very important for the early Buddhist texts about Anga and Agama.

Any advices? Thanks

Regards,

Thomas

This should be made into a sticky post in the early buddhism section, if possible.
