Aynone knows of Unicode Pali font for mac?

Post by pt1 »

Hi all,

Does anyone know about a Unicode romanised Pali font for a Mac? I have two fonts at the moment, but none of them seems to be Unicode:
- TimesPTSA from PTS: http://www.palitext.com/subpages/macfonts.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
- pChater from zolag: http://www.zolag.co.uk/font.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Basically, what I'd like to do is be able to type romanised Pali with diacritics in emails - like in yahoo or gmail. At the moment, these don't recognise the two fonts I have. And even when I copy a Pali passage from a word file into the email, all the diacritics are not recognised.

I know there are two useful converters from Velthius into Unicode (and other stuff):
http://www.codewallah.com/diCrunch/diCrunch.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/883" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

But these don't recognise the Pali passages I have in the non-Unicode fonts, so I have to re-enter everything first in Velthius. So, I'm basically hoping that typing documents in a Unicode Pali font will ensure that I don't have problems like these in the future at least. Thanks.

Best wishes

As far as I know, any Unicode TTF or OTF should work on the Mac — you could try mine. SIL also have some nice Unicode fonts such as Gentium or Charis.

Please us know how you get on.

Hi,

please try to change your keyboardsettings (system preferences -> country settings) to "US extended" (its just one below US and is also marked with a little "U"). Now you should be able to write with diacritics:

āūī alt+a, aui
ñ alt+n, n
ṣḍṭ alt+x, s d t
ṁṅ alt+w, m n

greetings,
Micha.

I created a custom keyboard for Windows, designed for typing just about any language including Pāli.

Thanks Venerable, you're right, ttf and otf really do work on macs. I also tried a few of your fonts and they work nicely as well, thanks. I just had to create a new keyboard layout so that the character input can go via keyboard.

Thanks Micha, this didn't work on my mac (maybe cause it's old - still on Jaguar), but it gave me the idea to try and make my own keyboard layout that would understand unicode input - and it worked. So thanks for the great idea.

If anyone else has similar troubles, you can create your own keyboard layouts for free with these:
http://scripts.sil.org/CMS/scripts/page ... id=ukelele" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
or if your OS is older:
http://wordherd.com/keyboards/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

If your OS is older (10.3 and below), have in mind that some old applications (pre-carbon) will not recognise Unicode keyboard layouts, so you'll need to create a Roman one that Apple script manager could understand.

If none of the above work, for any reason, PopChar X http://www.macility.com/products/popcharx/ may be useful. I used it way back on OS 9 (maybe even 7?) and it solved my problems with specialised music characters.
Now that I know it is available for OS X (this thread made me look - thanks, guys :smile: ) I will be installing it on my current system.

Hi Kim,

you can use "character palette" which is preinstalled. In system preferences -> country settings select the keyboard menu. There you can activate character palette (the third point on my machine [OS X 10.5]) and you can make this menu accessible via the menu bar by clicking the very last check box.

Greetings,
Micha.

Thanks, Micha.
I have been using character palette since I switched to OS X but it doesn't work as well for me as I remember the old Pop Char working, though it is now so long since I had Pop Char that I'm unclear about the differences - if that makes sense. :cookoo:

I am trying to use URW Palladio Pali in my new (and my first) Mac. I used it in PageMaker for years under Windows by simply entering Alt + XXXX (four numbers) for a diacritical letter (ex: Alt + 225 gives a-macron). I am now using InDesign in the Mac. I have installed URW Palladio Pali, and my documents from PageMaker carry over the Pali into InDesign. However, I cannot enter new text using diacriticals. Any suggestions?

[I am a Mac newbie. Been at it about 15 days, and never used a Mac before. If you have a suggestion, please understand that I will need help with Mac lingo!]

I don't know Mac, but I think you can create your own dead keys (the way I type on my computer) with Ukelele, a keyboard layout editor for Mac.

For example, I press both the right-alt key and the "-" key for a macron, and then type a, to do an ā. I think that this is much more efficient than using the alt+codes. Good luck!
