Iti 92. Sa"nghaa.tika.n.nasutta.m [Excerpt]

92. Vutta~nheta.m bhagavataa, vuttamarahataati me suta.m

"Sa"nghaa.tika.n.ne cepi, bhikkhave , bhikkhu gahetvaa pi.t.thito pi.t.thito
anubandho assa paade paada.m nikkhipanto, so ca hoti abhijjhaalu kaamesu
tibbasaaraago byaapannacitto padu.t.thamanasa"nkappo mu.t.thassati asampajaano
asamaahito vibbhantacitto paakatindriyo; atha kho so aarakaava mayha.m, aha~nca
tassa. Ta.m kissa hetu? Dhamma~nhi so, bhikkhave, bhikkhu na passati. Dhamma.m
apassanto na ma.m passati.

"Yojanasate cepi so, bhikkhave, bhikkhu vihareyya. So ca hoti anabhijjhaalu
kaamesu na tibbasaaraago abyaapannacitto apadu.t.thamanasa"nkappo
upa.t.thitassati sampajaano samaahito ekaggacitto sa.mvutindriyo; atha kho so
santikeva mayha.m, aha~nca tassa. Ta.m kissa hetu? Dhamma.m hi so, bhikkhave,
bhikkhu passati; dhamma.m passanto ma.m passatii"ti.

Iti 92. Sa"nghaa.tika.n.na sutta : Seeing the Dhamma [Excerpt]

This was said by the Blessed One, said by the Arahant, so I have heard: "Even if
a monk, taking hold of my outer cloak, were to follow right behind me, placing
his feet in my footsteps, yet if he were to be greedy for sensual pleasures,
strong in his passions, malevolent in mind, corrupt in his resolves, his
mindfulness muddled, unalert, uncentered, his mind scattered, and his faculties
uncontrolled, then he would be far from me, and I from him. Why is that? Because
he does not see the Dhamma. Not seeing the Dhamma, he does not see me (Dhamma.m
apassanto na ma.m passati).

"But even if a monk were to live one hundred leagues away, yet if he were to
have no greed for sensual objects, were not strong in his passions, not
malevolent in mind, uncorrupt in his resolves, his mindfulness established,
alert, centered, his mind at singleness, and his faculties well-restrained, then
he would be near to me, and I to him. Why is that? Because he sees the Dhamma.
Seeing the Dhamma, he sees me (Dhamma.m passanto ma.m passati)."

[Sa"nghaa.tika.n.na = the one who wears the robe which is stitched together.

"Distance" is the difference between the first paragraph and the second.
A monk following right behind an Arahart v a monk one hundred leagues away.

Distance is being used to illustrate the point that "Seeing the Dhamma" is not by seeing with ones eyes.
It is seen with the "mind".

i'am sorry, just some precisions.

The Dhamma is not any dhamma, to be seen by eyes of body or eye of mind. But it is, that, by it's purity, let us see all dhammas.
The Dhamma can bee seen directly in dhammas, like a reflection in mirrow, when we are attentive in they, and when we know what is aspect of those dhammas that shows a reflection of The Dhamma, their true nature.

We can see by our eyes the reflection of The Dhamma in all external dhammas
We can see by our mind, the refcletion of The Dhammas in all internal dhammas
We cant see The Dhamma, cause it cant be seen, like a weight that cant weight, the weight of weight.

Buddha is the one who Knows.
