how much of the visuddhimagga is found in the pali canon?

Postby alan... » Tue Jan 15, 2013 1:05 am

how much of it is clearly derived from the canon and how much of it is of later development? in my reading of it (which was short and jumped around) i found that most is from the canon and some things are nearly identical but are tweaked and reinterpreted. i only noticed a few things that were not also in the canon such as counting the breath. then there's things that are from the canon that were never fleshed out, like kasina practice, so they are unique but it's because they were never explained in detail in the first place. but again, i didn't read the whole thing.

one specific thing i'm unclear on is: are the seven stages of purification found in the canon?

Yes, the Rathavinãta Sutta in the Majjhima Nikaya. The elaboration from that is an interpretation/reinterpretation.

Here you go in case you haven't found it already:

laziness at it's finest. i prefer the bodhi translation but sometimes lifting the old arm and thumbing through pages is just to much work when i could have it nearly instantly in front of me on my screen lol!

Hi Alan,

You may find useful the book "Vimuttimagga and Visuddhimagga: A Comparative Study" by P V Bapat

http://awake.kiev.ua/bapat/vimuttimagga.zip (32 Mb)

and an article "The Treatise on the Path to Liberation (解脫道論) and the Visuddhimagga" by Anālayo

http://www.buddhismuskunde.uni-hamburg. ... ration.pdf

This can give you some answers, since Vimuttimagga is closely based on the Canon.

lol. i actually hate ebooks! i'm a walking contradiction in this arena. i love paper books and don't like even the idea of ebooks but i read on my computer all the time. yes, i'm ridiculous. also poor, can't afford an ereader and i wouldn't want to pay for an ebook to read on my computer that i could read for free. oh sweet contradiction.

Hi, dears all

Alan..., you should look at the reference of visuddhimagga, and read Patisambhidāmagga.
