Dear Members,

:candle: Abhidhamma View : Obstacles to the First Jhaana :candle:
[Presented by Dr.Tep Sastri @ SD/JTN]

In the Anguttara Nikaya, Anagami Vagga, Pa.thamajhaana Sutta, the Blessed One mentions six dhammas that must be given up in order that abiding in the first jhana is possible.

"Bhikkhus, without giving up these six things it is not possible to abide in the first higher state of the mind. Bhikkhus, giving up six things, it is possible to abide in the first higher state of the mind. What six?

(Group 1) "Sensual interest, anger, sloth and torpor, restlessness and worry, doubts, and NOT wisely seeing the dangers of sensuality as it really is."

(Group 2) "Sensual thoughts, angry thoughts, hurting thoughts, sensual perceptions (kaamasa~n~naa), angry perceptions (pa.tigha sa~n~naa) and hurting perceptions (vihi.msa sa~n~naa). Bhikkhus, giving up these six things it is possible to abide in the first higher state of the mind."

These akusala dhammas prevent the mind from growing steady and inwardly, from settling down, and from becoming unified & concentrated. Take heed!
