New website with Ajahn Achalo's teachings

Post by gavesako »

Welcome to “Peace Beyond Suffering.” For people who are interested in Peace, the practice of meditation plays a tremendously important role in helping you to realise your potential to experience deep clarity and well-being. This website has been created to be an easy to use resource for people with a sincere interest in meditation. You will find several meditation practices presented here in the form of step by step 'Guided Meditations.' There are also readings from Buddhist suttas and excerpts from the Dhamma Talks of contemporary meditation masters. These resources help us to see the meditation practices in a wise and balanced perspective. Ajahn Achalo's encouraging instructions and Dhamma Talks are useful supports to the practices presented here. We encourage you to explore the contents of this site.

Ajahn Achalo was born in Brisbane Australia in 1972. He developed a keen interest in meditation at the age of twenty and a year later left for Thailand to study Buddhism more intently. After a two year period practising in various centres and monasteries, in 1996 Ajahn Achalo ordained as a Theravada Bhikkhu (monk) under Ajahn Liem at Wat Nong Pah Pong, the monastery founded by venerable Ajahn Chah. Although most of his training has taken place in Thailand, Ajahn Achalo has also lived in several international Forest Monasteries in the Ajahn Chah lineage.

Ajahn Achalo is deeply grateful for his many opportunities to study with well-practiced monks as well as for having been able to train in several traditional contexts, including meditation monasteries, remote forests, and periods on pilgrimage. During his years of training, he has received personal guidance from many remarkable teachers, among them, Ajahn Sumedho, Ajahn Pasanno, Ajahn Jayasaro and Ajahn Kalyano. For most of his Bhikkhu life, he has considered Tan Ajahn Anan, abbot of Wat Marp Jan, to be his principal mentor. In addition, he has found the Dalai Lama's instructions and example to be of tremendous value.
The talks and guided meditations presented here are offered as an expression of this gratitude,
in the hope that they may assist those wishing to develop both
wisdom and inner peace.
Ajahn Achalo is the Abbot of a small forest monastery in the mountains of Petchabun Province, Thailand

My dear friends in England who update the website that hosts my talks and guided meditations ("Peace Beyond Suffering") have now added a "subscribe" function. (the link is below)
Anyone who subscribes will be automatically notified whenever a new talk or guided meditation has been added. There will be a brief description of the talk or meditation along with the notification and a direct link to the page where it can be found. I am hoping to be able to add one talk or meditation per week over the coming three or so months, from talks and meditations given during intensive meditation retreats in Malaysia, and also a few remaining talks from Pilgrimage to the Holy sites in India.

I sincerely hope that our efforts to make this material readily available are a source of nourishment and support for your spiritual practice.

Source of Creation and the Cessation of Suffering

This talk was given on the 8th morning of an intensive 9 day retreat held on top of a mountain in the middle of Penang Island, Malaysia. Having done our morning chanting and the first session of sitting for the day, we could also hear the impassioned moslem call to prayer from several mosques faintly in the distance. Incidently, the place where we were conducting our retreat had formerly been a Christian Brothers hermitage. The presence of multiple faiths literally hanging in the air, the lofty location of the centre as well as the lovely sense of stillness and introspection emanating from the sincere yogis, inspired me to offer some reflections pertaining to these quite profound subjects. Peoples’ minds had slowed down considerably over the course of the retreat and so the talk also moves quite slowly… it was offered perhaps more as a contemplation than as instruction. It is hoped that by listening to this short talk you may also share some of these timeless moments experienced by the yogis, whilst also recollecting the profound potential that we all innately possess.
