Post by starter »

Hello friend,

I wonder how to get Chinese Majjhima Nikaya in China for some Chinese friends who are going to start their practice in China. I searched on internet but didn't find such info. Your kind help would be appreciated.

If he doesn't respond to this thread, send a message to Paññāsikhara:

He can probably help you find what you're looking for.

Here is the place to find it:

http://sss2002.51.net/index2.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It will be the 中部 portion that is part of the entire Sutta Pitaka download -- see here for direct link:
汉译巴利藏经-经藏-五部完整版(台湾元亨寺版 PDF 格式 203M 点此下载) 或者选择 镜像下载

First of all, I am not sure if you mean the modern Chinese translation of the Pali text the Majjhima Nikaya, or the classic translation of the ancient text the Madhyama Agama.

For the Madhyama Agama, the whole canon is online in a number of places. The best source is probably here:

General information: http://jinglu.cbeta.org/cgi-bin/jl_deta ... sid=zurntp" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Index to the Madhyama Agama: http://www.cbeta.org/result/T01/T01n0026.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Another well edited version is to be found here: http://etext.fgs.org.tw/etext6/search-2.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Just search for 中阿含 and click the 中阿含 option, it will give all the sutras in this Agama.
You can also buy hard copy versions of this edition too, which are of good quality.

For the modern translations from the Pali, there are also a couple of sites, the best version is that from Yuanxiang si.
PDF files can be found: http://www.vipassana.com.my/Ci/CResourc ... rcesT3.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://www.vipassana.com.my/Ci/eBooks/Middle1.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://www.vipassana.com.my/Ci/eBooks/Middle2.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://www.vipassana.com.my/Ci/eBooks/Middle3.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://www.vipassana.com.my/Ci/eBooks/Middle4.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

However, the Yuanxiang si translation version is not that great, and has a few problems here and there.
There are some digital versions around, but I can't quite find the site I'm looking for at present.

Whatever the case, either the Agama and Nikaya version, these are still written in classic style. This is quite different from the English translations which are modern English. So, your friends will need to know classic Buddhist Chinese. They are also written in traditional characters, not simplified characters (the norm in the PRoC). So, simply picking up the texts and taking them as a basis for practice is not quite so simple. If they are familiar with this literature and style, then it won't be a problem, however.

:) This is quite inspiring to see. I often wondered when the Chinese people would reclaim their Buddhist heritage!

When did the Chinese people ever lose their Buddhist heritage? :thinking:

I would suggest they start asking from a local temple. There are hard copy translations available but I believe there are no complete translations in Modern Standard Mandarin. They will have to take it in smaller chunks, I think, if they require modern translations.

I would note you probably underestimate your friends' Chinese skills. I'm sure they can handle the classical version with a little help from a skilled teacher, just as we handle our native language texts. :) :namaste:

Currently a complete Chinese version for the Pali Tipitaka is not available, what I mean is translated directly from the Pali version.

That's why one shouldn't overlook the Madhyama Agama, as there are modern mandarin versions around:

http://www.cp1897.com.hk/product_info.p ... 9575434838" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

These are selections, but very easy to read.

I believe there is a complete (or near complete) copy of the entire Pali canon available in Chinese translation, though they may be a little short on the commentary, published by 高雄元亨寺漢譯南傳大藏經編譯委員會 (a translation committee formed by a temple in Kaohsiung, Taiwan).

Here's some PDF copies available online of various sections, including the Majjhima Nikaya:

Here's a second link with zipped versions of the downloads: http://www.neixue.org/tools/zangjing/20081209/320.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

And if they want a hard copy, here's some information about the publisher and the text you can relay to your friends.

Maybe you like to ask them, they are very kind and would do everything they are able. I saw that the Chinese books are not listed.
Just write them, it may need a little.

Even the mail costs they would take but they are also happy to provide more :-)
Just that! *smile*

My question is a little off topic but I'm interested to know , other than the ethnic Tai Lue people in Yunnan, are there Theravada temples for Han Chinese in China?

Hi friends,

Thanks for all the contributions. The easiest way to purchase hard copy Majjhima Nikaya/Agama is probably via:

http://www.taobao.com/

The following books are found there:

3. 中阿含经【台湾正版、礼盒8册】: is this the one published by 高雄元亨寺漢譯南傳大藏經編譯委員會?

4. 原版~梁曉虹《中阿含經1》 佛光: contains 20 suttas of Majjhima Agama.

Which one(s) would be the best for the beginners in China? Which one is the best collection of all Majjhima Agama?

As to Pilgrim's question, to my knowledge, other than the ethnic Tai Lue people in Yunnan, there are Theravada temples for Han Chinese in China. You can find such info in the web links provided in anther thread "Theravada Organizations in China". Metta,
