Are the Four Noble Truths fabricated?

Post by SarathW »

There is a question and answer in Cula-vedalla sutta as follows:

"Is the noble eightfold path fabricated or un-fabricated?"
"The noble eightfold path is fabricated."

My questions are:
Are the Four Noble Truths fabricated?
If yes why?
Is it a verbal fabrication?
What is the Pali word for fabrication?

Perhaps Ven. Bodhi's tranlation is a bit clearer:
Lady, is the Noble Eightfold Path conditioned or unconditioned?”
“Friend Visākha, the Noble Eightfold Path is conditioned
And Ven. Pesala's explanation from a previous thread:

Hi Santa
Thanks. Based on this can I say that whole Buddha Dhamma (Four Noble Truths) is conditioned.
or
Am I going too far and that I am asking a wrong question?

Well, the third noble truth is nibbana. Nibbana surely is not conditioned. But you could say the third noble truth in itself is conditioned, because the Buddha spoke it. Or you could say it's neither, because how can you condition a truth? It's a matter of words. What are you going to do with it if you would find the answer?
