Most of the defilements we accumulate are not from our actions & talk; but from our thoughts & wishes.
The three main roots of sin are greed, hatred & ignorance (Lobha, dwesha & Moha), which lead to sinful thoughts.
As two persons do not see eye to eye, the appearance of these thoughts would vary according to the place, situation and the person, even if the thought is the same.
This diversity has made it possible to count 1500 defilements which are caused by the three main roots of sin. If we can understand this situation at least to some extent, we would be able to live a life free of attachments.
Getting rid of these defilements restrains one’s mind. It opens the path to insight.

To be continued….
is it a mistake they put there pride ? or is it meant to actually mean pride - like his proud that his part of a big group maybe ?60. The pride a low born person has thinking that he is low born.
Re: The Thousand Five Hundred Defilements
A more accurate term probably is "conceit" (mana) which is the measuring of oneself against others in terms of inferiority, superiority, and equality with unwholesome intentions, including self-contempt:
~~ SN 22.49 ( http://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka ... .wlsh.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ) ~~"Whatever recluses and Brahmans, So.na, hold views about the body, which is impermanent, unsatisfactory and subject to change, such as 'I am better [than you],' 'I am equal [to you],' or 'I am worse [than you]' [likewise 'feeling,' 'perception,' 'mental formations,' 'consciousness'], what else are they but folk who do not see things as they really are?

Hi PP
In my openion, the best way to analyse defilements is given in Abhidhamma. Once you master it, you will be able to pin it down to the route cause.
Please note it is not easy to understand Abhidhamma but keep on trying, penny will drop oneday!
