Oozing out of nine holes!

Postby Bhikkhu_Samahita » Fri Dec 16, 2016 10:46 pm

Friends:

It comes in by 1 hole, but it oozes out of 9 holes!

Image

The Ancient Elders said:
The tasty food and drink, so greatly prized
Crisp to chew, soft to suck, whatever it may be:
Through one door, a single hole, it is loaded in,
Through nine holes it later oozes out again.
The delicious drink, the dainty food,
Hard, soft, whatever it may be:
Man like to enjoy in crowded company,
Yet, when excreting it, he hides in secrecy!
The delightful drink, the delicate food,
Hot, cold, of many and various sorts:
Man may enjoy, pleased with full delight,
Yet, when excreting it, he feels disgust.
The adored drink, the pleasing food,
Crunchy or pulpy, whatever it may be:
The whole, even after just one single night,
Will all become putrid, fetid and stinking....

The Mind Maker..

Postby Bhikkhu_Samahita » Mon Dec 19, 2016 9:40 pm

Friends:

The Clever Agrarian Mind Maker:

Image

As a good farmer removes weeds and rocks harmful to his field, similarly
does a monk remove anger and jealousy from his mind. When a thought comes
to his mind that produces defilement, then he immediately removes it, so that
his mind becomes pure again, like a field becomes ready once weeds and rocks
have been removed. Just like a farmer who cultivates his field with the best
rice seed and plants at the right time - first fertilizing for better growth -
so must the Buddhist disciple cultivate advantageous states like friendliness,
pity, mutual joy, and equanimity in order to purify, refine and enrich his mind.

Cultivate only friends of pure livelihood, of lovely moral

Intention is the Kamma..

Postby Bhikkhu_Samahita » Fri Dec 23, 2016 8:59 pm

Friends:

The Intention behind the Action is the Kamma!

Image

The Blessed Buddha once said:
It is the intention behind the action, that defines the kamma!
Having wanted, wished, & willed, one acts by body, speech, and mind.
There are actions (kamma), which cause later effects to ripen in hell!
There are actions, which cause later effects to ripen as being animal!
There is kamma, which cause later effects to ripen as a hungry ghost!
There are actions, which cause later effects to ripen as human being!
There is kamma, which cause later effects to ripen in divine states!
The result of actions (vipaka) is of three kinds: Ripening here & now
in the present life, in immediate next life, or in future lives. AN 6:63

Image

Ownership and inheritance of the delayed results of action:
All beings are the owners of their actions, inheritor of their deeds!
They are literally created by & born of their behaviour, they are tied
to their acts, & their undertakings determines their future destiny...
Whatever they do, good as bad, the delayed results of that action,
will be the theirs only... AN 10:206

Wherever beings spring into existence, there their actions will ripen!
Wherever the effects of their past actions matures, there, they will
earn the fruits of those deeds, be it in this life, or in the next life, or
in any other remote future life. AN 3:33

Image
Kamma = karma is just cause and delayed inevitable effect!

Neither high up in the air or free space, nor deep down in the oceans,
Nor hidden inside any distant remote & secret mountain cleft or cave
Nowhere... is a place or location found in any universe, where one can
escape the inevitable later results of wrong, bad, & evil behaviour...
Dhammapada 127

Image

Comments: Cause & Effect. Everything arises from a reason or cause!
Doing Good gets Good! The result of advantageous action is pleasure!
Doing Bad begets Evil! The result of disadvantageous action is pain!
Suffering now is often the delayed result of own past bad behaviour!
Enjoying now is often the delayed result of own past good behaviour!
Not taking responsibility for one's own life is pathetic victimization;
"The others or the circumstances did it!" playing the blame game...

Patience is the Highest Praxis...

Postby Bhikkhu_Samahita » Mon Dec 26, 2016 10:29 pm

Friends:

Patience is the 6th Perfection:

Image

The characteristic of patience is acceptance, its function is to endure,
and its manifestation is non-opposing tolerance! The cause of patience
is understanding how things really are.. The effect of patience is calm
tranquility despite presence of intensely stirring provocation..
Patience of the will produces forgiving forbearance!
Patience of the intellect produces faith, confidence and certainty!
Patience of the body produces resolute and tenacious endurance!
Internal tolerance of states within oneself is patient endurance...
External tolerance of other beings is forbearance and forgiveness...
He who patiently protects himself, protects also all other beings!
He who patiently protects all other beings, protects also himself!

Not from speaking much is one called clever.
The patient one is free from anger and free from fear,
only such steady persisting one, is rightly called clever...
Dhammapada 258

Patient tolerance is the highest praxis...
Nibbana is the supreme Bliss!
So say all the Buddhas.
Dhammapada 184

Image

The innocent one, who has done nothing wrong,
Who endures abuse, flogging and even imprisonment,
Such one, armed with stamina, the great force of tolerance,
Such stoic one, who self-possessed can accept, I call a Holy One!
Dhammapada 399

One should follow those who are determined, tolerant, and enduring,
intelligent, wise, diligent, clever, good-willed and evidently Noble.
One shall stick to them as the moon remains in its regular orbit.
Dhammapada 208

Friends, even if bandits were to cut you up, savagely, limb by limb,
with a two-handled saw, you should not get angry, but do my bidding:
Remain pervading them and all others with a friendly Awareness imbued
with an all-embracing good-will, kind, rich, expansive, and immeasurable!
Free from hostility, free from any ill will. Always remembering this very
Simile of the Saw is indeed how you should train yourselves.
Majjhima Nikaya 21

Image

The five ways of removing irritating annoyance:
Bhikkhus, there are these five ways of removing annoyance, by which any
irritation can be entirely removed by a Bhikkhu, when it arises in him.
What are these five ways?
1: Friendliness can be maintained towards an irritating person or state..
2: Understanding can be undertaken towards an irritating person or state..
3: On-looking Equanimity can be kept towards an irritating person or state..
4: One can forget and ignore the irritating person, mental or physical state..
5: Ownership of Kamma of the irritating person can be reflected upon thus:
This good person is owner of his actions, inherit the result his actions, is
indeed born of his actions and only he is responsible for his actions be they
good or bad. This too is how annoyance with the irksome can be instantly
removed. These are the five ways of removing annoyance, and by which any
irritation can be entirely removed in a friend, exactly when it arises...
Anguttara Nikaya V 161

Image

Buddha to his son Rahula: Develop an Imperturbable Mind like the elements:
Rahula, develop a mind like earth, then contacts of arisen like and dislike
will not obsess your mind! Rahula, on the earth is dumped both the pure and
the impure: excreta, urine, saliva, pus, blood, but the earth does not detest
any of those... Even and exactly so make your mind stable like the earth!
Rahula, develop a mind like water, then contacts of arisen pleasure and pain
will not seize your mind. Rahula with water both the pure and the impure
are cleaned... Washed away with water are excreta, urine, saliva, pus, and
blood, yet the water does not despise any of that! Even so make the mind
fluid and adaptable like the water!
Rahula, develop a mind like fire, then the contacts of any arisen attraction
or aversion will neither consume, nor hang on to your mind! Rahula, fire burns
both the pure and the impure, burns excreta, urine, saliva, pus, and blood,
yet the fire does not loathe any of that.. In the same manner refine the mind
into a tool like an all consuming and purifying fire!
Rahula, develop a mind similar to space, then contacts of arisen delight and
frustration does neither take hold of, nor remain in your mind. Space does
not settle anywhere! Similarly make the mind unsettled and unestablished
like open space. When you expand mind like space, contacts of delight and
frustration will neither be able to dominate, nor obsess your mind...
Majjhima Nikaya 62

Friends:

How to develop infinite Friendliness:

Image

Begin by extending Friendliness towards yourself:
May I be free from ill-will.
May I be free from hostility.
May I be free from adversity.
May I be happy.
May I be free from suffering.
May I not be separated from the good fortune I have attained.
I am the owner of my kamma and must inherit its results.

May the guardian deities in this house be free from anger.
May they be free from hostility.
May they be free from adversity.
May they be happy.
May they be free from suffering.
May they not be separated from the good fortune they have attained.
They are owners of their kamma and will inherit its results.

Next, extend Friendliness to your parents, teachers, relatives, and friends:
May my mother and father, teacher, relatives,
and associates be free from anger.
May they be free from hostility.
May they be free from adversity.
May they be happy.
May they be free from suffering.
May they not be separated from the good fortune they have attained.
They are owners of their kamma and will inherit its results.

Image

Then extend Friendliness to all kinds of living beings:
May all sentient things, all breathing things, all beings, all persons,
all individuals, all women, all men, all Noble Ones, all ordinary persons,
all deities, all human beings, all those destined for the states of loss,
may all these individualities be free from anger.
May they be free from hostility.
May they be free from adversity.
May they be happy.
May they be free from suffering.
May they not be separated from the good fortune they have attained.
All beings are the owners of their kamma and must inherit its results.

Finally, extend Friendliness in all directions:
In the east, the south, the west, the north, the south-east, the south-west,
the north-west, the north-east, below, and above. May all sentient things,
all breathing things, all beings, all persons, all individuals, all women, all men,
all Noble Ones, all ordinary persons, all deities, all human beings,
all those destined for the states of loss, be free from anger.
May they be free from hostility.
May they be free from adversity.
May they be happy.
May they be free from suffering.
May they not be separated from the good fortune they have attained.
All beings are the owners of their kamma and will inherit its results.

Slay all Anger!

Postby Bhikkhu_Samahita » Wed Jan 04, 2017 10:44 pm

Friends:

The Only Clever Killing:

Sakka - the king of the 33 divinities - once spoke these verses to the Blessed Buddha:

Having slain what, does one sleep in ease?
Having slain what, does one never sorrow?
What is the one thing 0ohh Gotama
Whose killing you can approve?

The Blessed One:
Having slain Anger, one sleeps in ease;
Having slain Anger, one does not sorrow
The killing of Anger, 0ohh Vasava
With its poisoned root and honeyed tip:
This is the killing, the Noble Ones approve.
For having slain that, one does not grieve.

Image

Sakka continued:
I am not one easily upset in mind.
Nor easily agitated by anger's whirl.
I never become angry for long
Nor does anger hang on in me.
When angry, I do not despise.
Nor do I praise own qualities.
I keep myself well under control.
Thus protecting my own good future!

Image

Therefore: Bring Anger under control;
Do not let your friendships waste away.
Do not blame the one who is blameless;
Do not speak splitting or divisive speech.
Their own anger crushes enraged people.
Like the roaring mountain avalanche!

Image

Do not let Anger overpower you;
Do not become angry with the angry.
Noble Ones always remain harmless.
Their own hate crushes angry people.
Like a devastating mountain avalanche.

Image

FUEL ON FIRE?
Not by anger is Hate ever quenched.
Only by Kind Friendliness is Hate always quenched.
This Ancient Law is an Eternal Truth ...

Today is Duruthu Full Moon Poya Day!

Postby Bhikkhu_Samahita » Wed Jan 11, 2017 11:57 pm

Friends:

How to be a Real Buddhist through Observance?

Image

Durutu Poya day is the full-moon of January. This holy day celebrates
the first visit of the Buddha to Sri Lanka. The Buddha visited the very
place, where the present magnificent Mahiyangana Stupa was built to
enshrine the Buddha's hair relics and the collar bone. For Details see:
http://www.buddhanet.net/sacred-island/mahiyangana.html and
https://What-Buddha-Said.net/library/DP ... angana.htm

Image
Mahiyangana Stupa

On such Full-Moon Uposatha Poya Observance days:
Any Lay Buddhist simply joins the Three Refuges and undertakes the
Five Precepts like this: Newly bathed, shaved, white-clothed, with clean
bare feet, one kneels at a shrine with a Buddha-statue, and bows first
three times, so that feet, hands, elbows, knees & head touch the floor.
Then, with joined palms at the heart, one recites these memorized lines
in a loud, calm & steady voice:

As long as this life lasts:
I hereby take refuge in the Buddha.
I hereby take refuge in the Dhamma.
I hereby take refuge in the Sangha.
I hereby seek shelter in the Buddha for the 2nd time.
I hereby seek shelter in the Dhamma for the 2nd time.
I hereby seek shelter in the Sangha for the 2nd time.
I hereby request protection from the Buddha for the 3rd time.
I hereby request protection from the Dhamma for the 3rd time.
I hereby request protection from the Sangha for the 3rd time.

I will hereby respect these Three Jewels the rest of my life!

I accept to respect & undertake these 5 training rules:
I hereby accept the training rule of avoiding all Killing.
I hereby accept the training rule of avoiding all Stealing.
I hereby accept the training rule of avoiding all Sexual Abuse.
I hereby accept the training rule of avoiding all Dishonesty.
I hereby accept the training rule of avoiding all Alcohol & Drugs.

As long as this life lasts, I am thus protected by these 5 precepts...

Then, one keeps and protects these sacred vows better than one's
own eyes & children!, since they protect you & all other beings much
better than any army! They are the highest offer one can give in & to
this world! So is the start towards Nibbana: the Deathless Element!
This is the Noble Way to Peace, to Freedom, to Ease, to Happiness,
initiated by Morality, developed further by Dhamma-Study and
fulfilled by training of Meditation...

Image

Today indeed is Pooya or uposatha or observance day, where any lay
Buddhist normally keeps even the Eight Precepts from sunrise until the
next dawn... If any wish an official recognition by the Bhikkhu-Sangha,
they may simply forward the lines starting with "I hereby ..." signed with
name, date, town, & country to me or join here. A public list of this new
quite rapidly growing global Saddhamma-Sangha is set up here!

The New Noble Community of Buddha's Disciples: The Saddhamma Sangha:

https://What-Buddha-Said.net/sangha/Sad ... Sangha.htm

Can quite advantageously be Joined Here:
https://What-Buddha-Said.net/sangha/Sangha_Entry.htm

May your journey hereby be light, swift, and sweet. Never give up !!

Experiencing the Breath!

Postby Bhikkhu_Samahita » Wed Jan 18, 2017 8:01 pm

Friends:

Special Experiences might cure illness instantly!

Image

Once when Venerable Girimananda was sick, the Buddha said to Ven. Ananda.
What is the experience of acute Awareness by in-&-out Breathing?
It is when a Bhikkhu, who have gone to the forest, or to the root of a tree,
or to an empty hut, sits down cross-legged, having straightened his body and
back, and set up awareness around the nostrils, then just plain aware of only
that itself, he breathes in, and then just solely aware of only that breathing
in itself, he then breathes out...
1: Breathing in-&-out long, he knows, notes & understands: I in-&-exhale long!
2: Breathing in short, he knows, notes & understands: I in-&-exhale short!
3: He trains thus: Experiencing this entire body, I will breathe in-&out!
4: He trains thus: Calming all bodily activity, I will breathe in-&out!
5: He trains thus: Experiencing enraptured joy, I will breathe in-&out!
6: He trains thus: Experiencing a happy pleasure, I will breathe in-&out!
7: He trains thus: Experiencing all mental activity, I will breathe in-&out!
8: He trains thus: Calming all mental activity, I will breathe in-&out!
9: He trains thus: Experiencing the present mood, I will breathe in-&out!
10: He trains thus: Elating & gladdening the mind, I will breathe in-&out!
11: He trains thus: Concentrating & focusing mind, I will breathe in-&out!
12: He trains thus: Releasing, & liberating the mind, I will breathe in-&out!
13: He trains thus: Considering impermanence, I will breathe in-&out!
14: He trains thus: Considering disillusion, I will breathe in-&out!
15: He trains thus: Considering ceasing, I will breathe in-&out!
16: He trains thus: Considering relinquishment, I will breathe in-&out!
Having learnt and memorized these 16 simple steps from the Blessed One,
the Venerable Ananda went to the Venerable Girimananda and recited these
to him. Then as soon as Venerable Girimananda heard these 16 simple steps
& the ten experiences his illness instantly subsided & he rose from his bed!
This was thus the way Venerable Girimananda was cured from his sickness....
