Energy entails Enthusiasm ;-)

Post by Bhikkhu_Samahita »

Friends:

How Emerges the Ability of Energy?

Image

The initiation of deliberately directing mind for the sole purpose of exertion,
is the very first initiating sprouting arising of the mental ability of energy .
The growing of keen eagerness and enthusiasm under the influence of the
success of the exertion itself, expands the arising of the energy ability.
Presence of focused attention and fixed consideration conditioned by the
guided control of exertion, increases the emergence of the energy ability.
The unification of one-pointed concentration under the condensing
influence of this effort, adds to the arising of the energy ability.
Non-appearance of laziness, is the advantage of the energy ability.
Absence of the frustration of laziness, is the charm of this ability.
Entering mental absorption is the motive behind the energy ability.
Assured stability of effort is the very power of the energy ability.
Enthusiastic pleasure & joy is the fascination of the energy ability.
The emergence of laziness is the danger for the ability of energy.
Through bold striving this ability of energy escapes from laziness!

Going Even over the Uneven...

Post by Bhikkhu_Samahita »

Friends:

The Relief of Relinquishing all Resentment!

Image

When one's resentment towards any hostile person has been allayed, then
one can deliberately turn mind with loving-kindness towards any person:
Both the very dear friend, the neutral person and the hostile opponent!
By repeated praxis of meditation on infinite friendliness one gradually
breaks down the mental barrier of evil opposition thereby accomplishing
mental impartiality towards the 4 persons: oneself, the very dear person,
the neutral person and the hostile person. Suppose a trainee is sitting in
a place with a dear, a neutral, and a hostile person, himself being the 4th.
Then bandits come to him and say, 'Venerable friend, give us a person so
that we may kill him and use the blood of his throat as an offering'...!
When one does not see a single one among these four people suitable to
be given to the bandits and one directs mind impartially towards oneself
and towards those three people, then one has broken down the barriers...

Image
Breaking the Barrier to: Impartiality

Therefore the Ancient Nobles said:
When he does not discriminates between the 4 persons:
That is: Himself, the dear, the neutral, and the hostile one,
Then "Skilled" is not the name he gets, nor "Most Friendly",
But only "Kind towards all beings". Now when a bhikkhu's
barriers towards all the 4 persons have been broken down,
Then he treats with equal amity all beings in the whole world;
Exalted and distinguished is he, who knows no barriers...
Vism 307

Universal friendliness, which cures all resentment, is a divine state:

Non-Agitation through detached Release:

Image

The Blessed Buddha once said:
How, friends, is there non-agitation through detached release?
Regarding this, friends, the educated normal person, who is a friend of a Noble
One, and who is clever, and well trained in his Dhamma, or who is a friend of a
Great Man, and is clever, and well trained in his Dhamma, avoids regarding form
as a self, he avoids regarding self as having form, he avoids regarding form as if
inside any self, or any self as if inside any form! Then inevitably his body form
changes and decays. When this change and decay of his material form occurs,
his mind does not become occupied, or obsessed with this change of just a form!
Therefore does no agitated mental state, arisen from worry over this changed
merely physical body form, remain obsessing his mind squeezing it into sadness...
Because his mind is not obsessed, then he is neither frightened, nor distressed,
nor anxious, and via this detached non-clinging his inner agitation is all stilled!
He does not regard feeling as self ... perception as self ... mental construction
as self ... consciousness as self, nor the self as possessing consciousness, nor as
consciousness as if being inside any self, nor any the self as being 'inside' any
consciousness ... When his consciousness momentarily changes and alters, then
his mind does not become engaged with this momentary change of consciousness.
Therefore does no agitated mental state, emerged from concern over this changing
consciousness, remain obsessing his mind.. Because his mind is neither obsessed,
nor upset, nor troubled, nor uneasy with this, or any other change whatsoever,
does this aloof and detached mind silence, still, calm, and evaporate all his prior
agitations with this and that change.. It is exactly in this way, friends, that there
is non-agitation caused by detachment, relinquishment, and absence of clinging.

Mental Release by Friendliness Outshines All!

Image

The Blessed Buddha often emphasized:
Bhikkhus, whatever kinds of worldly merit there are, all are not worth one
sixteenth part of the release of mind by universal friendliness; in shining,
glowing and beaming radiance, such release of mind by universal friendliness
far excels & surpasses them all...
Itivuttaka 27

See this good being is happy! How fine! How excellent! Let there be Happiness!
Let there indeed be Freedom! Let there indeed be Peace! Let there be Bliss....
Let there be Understanding of this good principle.
Buddhaghosa

May all beings be joyous and safe! Let every creature's mind rejoice!
Let every single living being's mind be exceedingly jubilant!
One should maintain an infinite friendliness for every single living being,
in gentle sympathy for this entire universe, unlimited, endless and vast!
This is the Divine Dwelling while actually here, they say.
Buddha Gotama

The Bhikkhu pervades all beings with all-embracing friendliness ...
The Bhikkhu encompass all beings with universal & endless pity ...
The Bhikkhu permeates all beings with infinite & mutual joy ...
The Bhikkhu suffuses all beings with unlimited equanimity ...
Digha Nikaya 33

May all creatures, all breathing things,
all beings one and all, without exception,
experience good fortune only.
May they not fall into any harm.
Anguttara Nikaya II, 72

Thus he who both day and night
takes delight in harmlessness
sharing love with all that live,
finds enmity with none.
Samyutta Nikaya I 208

Name and Form...

Post by Bhikkhu_Samahita »

Friends:

The Basic Duality is Name and Form...

Image

The Blessed Buddha once explained mentality-materiality like this:
So, bhikkhus, for the fool, who is blinded by ignorance and obsessed
by craving, there re-arises this body. Now this body with its 6 senses
sources makes a duality: name-&-form or mentality-&-materiality...
Due to this duality there is contact. Touched & stirred by contact the
fool feels pleasure & pain. Bhikkhus, craving increases in any one who
dwells seeing enjoyment in things productive of pleasure! With craving
as condition, there is clinging. Clinging is the condition causing becoming.
By becoming is there birth. Thus re-arises a new body also with 6 senses.
With birth as condition the cycle of ageing, sickness and death, sorrow,
lamentation and despair is thus renewed once again. Such is therefore
the origin of this entire mass of suffering.... (SN II 23-4, 84)

Comments:
Name-and-Form is a duality of two joined phenomena travelling trough
time together, just like 2 persons, who is travelling in the same boat:

Image

Name or mind can be likened to a man with good eyes, but without legs...
Mind can see & understand everything, but not itself move even a sandcorn!
Form or body materiality can be likened to a blind man with strong legs.
Matter and Body cannot see or understand anything, but can lift a stone...
Name-and-form, mind-and-matter, mentality-materiality joined together
becomes very effective, just like if the seeing yet crippled man rides on
the shoulders of of the blind man directing him about: Go this way & stop...
Mind is like the ghost in the bottle: Imprisoned, unconnected & powerless...
Matter is like a robot with the power turned off: Blind, dumb and frozen...
Mind joined with matter however comes to life! Now both seeing and moving!

Question 111: Can past kamma stop the doing of good deeds? Is this why some cannot meditate?

Question 112: Is there any purpose in dedicating merit to the dead and departed?

Question 113: Is there a path we can follow to reduce our bad karma from past lives?

Question 114: How does past life kamma contribute to decide the events of our lives?
Does Karma decide the majority of things in our lives?

The Core Duality

Post by Bhikkhu_Samahita »

Friends:

Reality is Moments of Mentality & Materiality!

Image

Nama-Rupa = Name-and-Form, Naming-and-Forming!

The mind is that, which knows the object! The object is that, which is known!
These two processes always arise and cease together simultaneously...
Neither inside, within, nor apart from, outside these two is any observer agent,
person, I, Me, or other assumed entity as a hidden variable, ever involved!
The mind is immaterial, formless and invisible. The object may be designated
or named 'material', 'physical', 'formed' and even 'visible' only and exactly
to the extent and in so far as it is experienceable by the mind!
No same, constant, lasting 'real', 'actual' or 'substantial substance' has ever
existed 'out there' independently or separable from the mind, that right then
momentarily perceived and thereby apprehended, displayed, manifested and
designated it! This core dual pair of mentality (nama) and materiality (rupa),
is thus one united yet dual continuum, like the two ends of the same stick!
They do never emerge, nor do they ever exist, nor can they ever be observed
separately, in and of themselves, but they can only arise in mutual dependence,
like two thin creepers can only arise & stand up if intertwined with each other.
Mentality & materiality thus arise and cease simultaneously in each moment!
They are thus the most basic, fundamental and primary pair on the bottom of
the dynamic ever-changing process of any being in any existence...
What is called 'matter' is delimited, defined, characterized, conceptualized,
compartmentalized and even named by mind! Therefore can matter never be
separated from mind, like if one tries to break the dual-ended stick in order
to separate the ends, then one always gets two sticks, still each with 2 ends!
Therefore one unambiguously always ends up with observing a pair-wise new
event of mentality & materiality! The basic founding, yet often unnoticed,
unspoken and maybe even sometimes actively denied assumption underlying
all Western science that: The naked, inert, objective observation is possible!
'Matter can be observed and analyzed objectively, independently of mind!'
is therefore utterly false, futile and even somewhat childish... No observation
can ever be independent of mind! Why not? What is observing IS the mind!
The naive physicist who postulates: 'Independently of Mind, "I!" will observe,
describe and evaluate matter!' extending out of his range of understanding,
thus speaks folly false and is thereby later ultimately enforced to introduce
'mysti-phystical' entities as 'hidden variables' into his explanations, in order
to reach completeness, coherence and internal consistence...
He seems to be in complete oblivion of the dry fact, that even before one even
thinks of, even speaks of, or experiment with any 'matter', mind have indeed
been long and hard at work! The basic hidden, yet always present, factor in
any observation, is naturally mind itself!
However, this factor is not so hidden, that it cannot be observed & analyzed
and that even without any laboratory or even a single 'instrument' apart from
a pillow to sit on!
Everyone, without even a single exception, who sits down with closed eyes, will
instantly be overwhelmed by a veritable storm of mentally created distractions:
This is the Mind! This is mental activity knocking your door... Undeniably real!
When this dynamic self-sustaining duality of mentality-materiality, this self-
sustaining perpetum mobile, cease to evolve, consciousness thereby ceases to
establish itself on an object! This - only this, in and of itself - is the very final
End of all Suffering...

Pure Action x 3!

Post by Bhikkhu_Samahita »

Friends:

Good for All are the 3 Kinds of Right Bodily Action!

Image

The Blessed Buddha once said:
How, Cunda, is purity of bodily action 3-fold?
1: Harmlessness!
Herein, someone avoids the destruction of all life, he does never kill any living being.
Without stick or weapon, careful, kind, gentle, and full of sympathy, he protects the
welfare of all living, sentient and breathing beings!
2: Honesty!
One avoids all stealing, abstains from taking what is not freely given, what another
possesses of goods and property in the village or in the woods, one does not take
any of that away with thievish intent!
3: Decency!
One avoids any illicit and abusive sexual contact, and abstains from all adultery:
One has no intercourse with children, who are under the protection of father,
mother, brother, relatives, nor with any married persons, nor with any convicts,
nor with betrothed persons, nor with those engaged to another partner!

The Siamese Twins ...

Post by Bhikkhu_Samahita »

Friends:

Mentality & Materiality are Mutually Dependent:

Image

Mentality alone has no efficient power, it cannot eat, drink, speak, nor walk...
Materiality alone is also without sufficient power, since it cannot do anything
without orders and drive: It has neither desire to eat, drink, speak, nor walk...
When materiality and mentality are joined together, these two twins can act:
When mentality (mind) has a desire to eat, a desire to drink, a desire to speak,
or a desire to walk, it is materiality (body) that eats, drinks, speaks and walks!
Mentality is like the robot's software. Materiality is like the robot's hardware.

ImageImage
Mentality and Materiality, Mind & Matter are Inseparable!

Therefore did the Ancient Elders say:
The mental and the material does really exist,
But here there is no 'human being' to be found,
For it is void and merely fashioned like a doll!
Just suffering piled up like grass and sticks...
The mental and the material: Name-and-Form
Are Siamese Twins, that each supports the other:
When one dies, they both die, surely inseparable,
Due to the necessary mutual dependence...
They cannot come to be by their own strength,
Or even maintain themselves by their own power
Depending on other states, weak in themselves,
Conditioned and constructed, they come to be;
They come to be, with others as crucial requirement.
They are activated by others as if their controller,
They are thus produced by object and condition,
And each by something other, than itself...
And just as men depend upon
A boat for traversing the sea,
So does the mental mind need the
material body for real efficiency.
And as the boat depends upon
The men for traversing the sea,
So does the material body need the
mental mind for induction & control.
Depending each upon the other.
The boat and men can sail the seas.
And so do both mind and matter
Depend, the one, upon the other...
Vism 597

He who neither punishes, nor makes others punish,
He who neither steals, nor makes others steal,
He who in friendly goodwill shares with all that lives,
such kind gentle one meets no enmity anywhere...

Train yourself in doing only what is good,
that will last and bring great happiness!

The Blessed Buddha Once said:

Image

I am a friend and helper to all,
I am sympathetic to all living beings.
I develop a mind full of love
and takes always delight in harmlessness.
I gladden my mind, fill it with joy,
and make it immovable and unshakable.
I develop the divine states of mind
not cultivated by simple men.
Theragatha. 648-9

Image

I am a friend of the footless,
I am a friend of the bipeds;
I am a friend of those with four feet,
I am a friend of the many-footed.
May not the footless harm me,
may not the bipeds harm me,
may not those with four feet harm me,
and may not those with many feet harm me.
AN II 72

Image

Thus he who both day and night
takes delight in harmlessness
sharing love with all that live,
finds enmity with none.
Samyutta Nikaya. I 208

When one with a mind of love
feels compassion for the entire world
above, below and across,
unlimited everywhere.
Jataka 37

Among tigers, lions, leopards & bears I lived on the wood.
No one was frightened of me, nor did I fear anyone.
Uplifted by such universal friendliness I enjoyed the forest.
Finding great solace in silent yet friendly solitude.
