Calm and Insight!

Post by Bhikkhu_Samahita »

Friends:

Calm (samatha) & Insight (vipassana):

Image

There are two principal kinds of mental development:
1: Development of mental tranquillity and calm (samatha-bhavana)
culminating in the development of concentration (samadhi-bhavana)
And!
2: Development of insight (vipassana-bhavana) culminating in the
development of understanding (pañña-bhavana).
Both qualities: Calm and Insight, are essential & crucial for release!
Tranquil Calm (samatha) is the pleasant, peaceful, yet lucid state of
a settled mind acquired as a preliminary to meditative absorption.
It blesses the meditator with 3 things: Happy life, happy rebirth, &
a mental purity suitable for gaining progressive penetrating insight!
Concentration is a necessary prerequisite for such cutting insight..
Why so? It removes distractions that veil the investigating vision!
Insight is that which leads to entrance of the 4 stages of Nobility..
Why so? It irreversibly removes gross & latent mental hindrances!
The term samadhi literally means ~being firmly put evenly together
(sam + a+ dha) & is mental state focused on only one single object=
cittassaekaggata, which literally means ~ one-pointedness of mind.
Any state of consciousness has a degree of mental concentration!
One may distinguish these four stages or levels of concentration:
1: Momentary or transient concentration (khanika-samadhi),
2: Preliminary or preparing concentration (parikamma-samadhi),
3: Access or approaching concentration (upacara-samadhi),
4: Absorption or attainment concentration (appana-samadhi).

Insight (vipassana) is the penetrative understanding, gained by only
direct meditative experience of the inherent transience, misery, &
selflessness (anicca, dukkha, anatta) of all physical & mental states
of existence all included in these 5 clusters (khandha) of clinging:
form, feeling, perception, mental construction, and consciousness.
Bhavana is derived from the causative form of the verbal root bhu,
bhavati = to be, to become, causing to be, making come into being,
the calling into existence of, the production of or development of.
When applied to Mental Training this simply means Meditation...

The 10 Questions to the Enlightened Boy!

Image

Sopaka awakened as novice, when 7 years old! The Buddha then asked him:
One is what? All beings are fuelled by Nutriment (Ahara) answered the boy.
Two is what? Name and form (Nama-Rupa), responded the novice promptly!
Three is what? The three kinds of Feeling, was this assured boy's reply...
Four is what? The Four Noble Truths, returned this perfected novitiate..
Five is what? The Five Clusters of Clinging, acknowledged this not-pupil..
Six is what? The Six Sense-Sources, responded this all trained & learned.
Seven is what? The Seven Links to Awakening, answered this eldest boy..
Eight is what? The Noble Eightfold Path, replied this one gone to the end!
Nine is what? The Nine Abodes of Beings, explained this worthy junior...
Ten is what? One who is endowed with Ten Qualities is defined an Arahat....
Khp 1-6;9

ImageImage
Matured Mind and not an old body defines the worthy Senior!

More on this Sopaka, who became Enlightened, when only 7 years old:
http://What-Buddha-Said.net/library/DPPN/s/sopaka.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Having accumulated the right conditions in prior lives, he was almost & very
close to be able to awaken in his last life... Therefore he could enlighten as
only 7 years old in this his last existence! Though his biological frame was
that young, his mind was the eldest & most mature among his un-awakened
monk colleagues. Any Arahat is the oldest and most senior in the universe!
To make the other monks understand, that they should not clap his head &
treat him as junior, although they were much older than him biologically,
the Buddha asked him these ten questions, which are studied intensely by
all Theravada novices even today 2500 years after! May all disciples do so!
These 10 questions are not trivial!

The Blessed Buddha once said:
Bhikkhus & friends: There is one contemplation, which when often
practised and developed leads to the complete turning away from
the world, to detachment, to stilling, to ceasing, to Peace, to final
penetrating knowledge, to Enlightenment, and thus to Nibbana...
Any Noble Disciple who by progress have understood the Dhamma
dwells frequently in this state. Which is that unique contemplation?
It is reflecting over the qualities of own charity exactly like this:
A Noble Disciple reviews & recollects his own generosity Caga thus:
Truly, blessed am I, highly lucky: Among beings all polluted by evil,
stingy and mean niggardliness, I am living with a mind freed from
avarice, open-handed, liberal, in high-minded largesse, all inviting to
all beggars, rejoicing in giving and sharing all I have with others!

Some Comments:
Giving is basic medicine against & training in relinquishing Clinging.
Exactly as much one is able to give now, will one get in the future!
The proximate cause of poverty vs. richness is thus stinginess vs. sharing!

Dual Consideration!

The Twin Truths won by Dual Consideration:

The blessed Buddha once said:
Friends, the first clever consideration is:
Such is Suffering, and This is the Cause of Suffering.
Another consequent & subsequent consideration is:
Such is the End of Suffering, and This is the Way to end Suffering.
One who lives considering these cautiously, resolutely & enthusiastically,
may either enter the state of Nibbana  right here & now in this very life,
or if there is remaining traces of clinging, the state of non-return...
Those who neglect understanding Suffering, The Cause of Suffering,
The End of Suffering, & The Way all Suffering is completely eliminated,
are incapable of release by understanding, are incapable of mental release,
are incapable of direct knowledge, & are thereby incapable of making an end...
While those who undertake to develop real understanding of This Suffering,
The Cause of Suffering, The End of Suffering, & The Way to End Suffering,
are indeed capable of mental release by understanding, direct knowledge,
and thus also capable of making an end...

Acquisitions Accumulate ...

Post by Bhikkhu_Samahita »

Friends:

The Twin Truths won by keen Dual Consideration:

Image

The blessed Buddha once said:
Friends, the first consideration is:
Whatever Suffering arises, this Suffering is caused by Acquisition!
Another consequent & subsequent consideration is therefore:
Stopping all Acquisition of Fuel, stops all arising of Suffering!
Taking up many acquisitions, clinging to possessions & thereby accumulating
fuel for renewed becoming, the fool comes to Suffering ever again & again!
Letting go, renouncing, & leaving all behind, the wise goes scot free at ease!

Considering these twin truths cautiously, resolutely & enthusiastically, one
may either enter the state of Nibbana  right here & now in this very life,
or if there is remaining traces of Clinging left, the state of non-return...
Those who neglect analysis & understanding of Clinging, the origin of Clinging,
the end of Clinging, and how Clinging is completely & irreversibly eliminated,
are incapable of release by understanding, are incapable of mental release,
are incapable of direct knowledge, & thus incapable of making an end...
They repeat birth, ageing, decay, sickness and death ever again & again...
While those who undertake understanding of Clinging, Origin, End & Way,
are indeed capable of mental release by understanding, direct knowledge,
& thus capable of making an end... They are headed towards the deathless!

Not Knowing the 4 Truths!

Ignorance is Not Knowing the 4 Noble Truths!

The blessed Buddha once said:
Friends, the first clever consideration is:
Whatever Suffering arises, this Suffering is caused by Ignorance!
Another consequent and subsequent consideration is:
Clearing all Ignorance by Understanding, stops all arising of any Suffering!

This immensely long round of rebirth with transition from now this, then to that form,
is caused by this dreadfully deep Ignorance alone! Those who really understand this,
do not renew any return into any form of being...
Considering these twin truths cautiously, resolutely & enthusiastically, one may either
enter the state of Nibbana  right here & now in this very life, or if there is remaining
traces of Clinging left, win the state of non-return...
Those who neglect understanding of Ignorance, the origin of Ignorance, the End of
Ignorance, and how Ignorance is completely eliminated, are incapable of release by
Understanding, are incapable of mental release, are incapable of direct knowledge,
and are thereby incapable of making an end...
They will therefore repeat birth, ageing, decay, sickness and death ever again...
While those who do undertake understanding of Ignorance, Origin, End & Way,
are indeed capable of mental release by understanding, direct absolute knowledge,
and thus capable of making an end... They are thus headed towards the deathless!

Stilling the Mental Cacophony..

The blessed Buddha once said:
Friends, the first consideration is:
Whatever Suffering arises, all that is caused by Mental Construction!
The consequent second consideration is:
Stilling of all Mental Construction thereby ceases all Suffering completely!

Knowing this danger: - All Suffering is caused by Mental Construction -,
by silencing all experience, sensation and feeling, the wise escape all Pain!
Considering these twin truths cautiously, resolutely and enthusiastically,
one may either enter the state of Nibbana right here and now in this life,
or if there is remaining traces of clinging left, the state of a non-returner.
Those who neglect understanding of mental construction, the origin of
mental construction, the end of mental construction, and how mental
construction is eliminated, are incapable of release by understanding,
are incapable of mental release, are incapable of direct knowledge, and
are thereby incapable of making an end...They repeat birth, ageing, decay,

of mental construction, Origin, End and Way, indeed are capable of mental
release by understanding, sure certainty, and capable of making an end...

Consciousness Causes Collapse...

Post by Bhikkhu_Samahita »

The Twin Truths won by keen Dual Consideration:

The blessed Buddha once said:

Friends, the first consideration is:
Whatever Suffering arises, it does so caused by Consciousness!
Another consequent and subsequent consideration is:
By ending Consciousness , there cannot ever arise any Suffering!

Knowing this danger: All Suffering emerges due to Consciousness, and by
stopping consciousness, there cannot therefore ever be any pain!, any with
intelligence would quench his craving, and latent urge for being conscious...
Considering these twin truths cautiously, resolutely and enthusiastically,
one may either enter the state of Nibbana right here and now in this life,
or if there is lasting traces of clinging left, the state of a non-returner...
Those who neglect the understanding of consciousness itself, the cause of
consciousness, the end of consciousness, & how consciousness is completely
eliminated, are incapable of release by understanding, are thus incapable
of mental release, are incapable of direct knowledge, and are thereby also
incapable of making an end...They repeat birth, ageing, decay, sickness and
death ever again! While those who undertake understanding of Consciousness,
Origin, End & Way, are quite capable of mental release by understanding,
and capable of making an end... They are indeed near the deathless dimension!

Questions answered:

Q1: How to cultivate and harvest fields of plant foods according to Buddhism?

Q2: Is there any explanation of the ‘double slit experiment’ via the Buddha-Dhamma?

Q3: A lay man will either go forth or die at the day of awakening. Why is this so?

Q4: Is addiction to Facebook, YouTube, internet-porn a 5th precept intoxicant?

Q5: Why are Sakka the Chief of the Thirty-Three and the Brahma devas called 'Gods'?

Q6: Are all beings above at the 31 levels of existence following the Buddha-Dhamma?

Infinite Loving-Kindness is an Exalted State!

Image

The Blessed Buddha once explained Loving-Kindness like this:
This is what should be done by a clever one to arouse the advantageous:
Having attained a peaceful state: He should be capable, straight, and very
upright, easy to speak to, gentle and not proud, contented and easy to support,
with few duties, living simple, with calmed senses, devoted, and neither angry,
nor greedy. He should not do any mean thing, which wise men would criticize.
He always should wish: Let all beings be happy, joyous, glad, safe and secure.
Whatever living creatures there exist, still or moving, small or large, seen or
unseen, far or near, already existing or coming into being, let all these living
beings without any even single exception be completely and perfectly happy!
One should never despise anyone anywhere, nor humiliate anyone anywhere,
nor ever wish for any beings misery or harm, because of anger or irritation.
Just as a mother would protect her only little son even risking her own life,
exactly so should one cultivate an unbounded mentality towards all beings:
Loving-kindness towards all in this universe. One should cultivate an infinite
mind, above, below and across, without barriers, without enmity, matchless..
Whether standing, going, sitting, or lying down, even when slumbering should
one practise this exalted infinite goodwill. This is said to be a Sacred State!

Mighty Majestic Magic!

Establishing Awareness Creates a Mighty Magic Power!

Image

Saketa was the place where Venerable Sariputta said this to Venerable Anuruddha:
Friend Anuruddha, by cultivating and making much of which conditions have you
developed such mighty magic power and supreme majesty ?

Friend, it is by cultivating and making much of the Four Foundations of Awareness
that I have done so. What four? Herein friend,

I dwell contemplating body just as a form ... & the rise and fall of body ...
both own and other ... internal and external ... past, present and future!
I dwell contemplating feeling just as reaction ... & the rise and fall of feeling ...
both own and other ... internal and external ... past, present and future!
I dwell contemplating all mind just as moods ... & the rise and fall of mind ...
both own and other ... internal and external ... past, present and future!
I dwell contemplating all phenomena just as mental states ...
& rise and fall of mental states ... both own and other ... internal and external ...
whether past, present and future!

Moreover, friend it is by cultivating and making much of these Four Foundations of Awareness
that I have come to completely & directly experience this thousandfold galactic world-system.
Moreover, it is because of having cultivated & made much of these Four Foundations of Awareness
that the painful feelings that come upon my body make no contact on my mind.
Moreover, it is because of having cultivated & made much of these Four Foundations of Awareness
that I enjoy  many forms of magic powers: From being one I become many, visible or invisible ...
& even as far as the fine material Dark matter Brahma world do I exert power with my body.
Moreover, it is because of having cultivated & made much of these Four Foundations of Awareness,
that I hear with divine hearing purified and supra-human the sound of both man and deva, far or near.
Moreover, it is because of having cultivated & made much of these Four Foundations of Awareness,
that I know the minds of other beings; the lustful as lustful ... the liberated as liberated.
Moreover, it is because of having cultivated & made much of these Four Foundations of Awareness,
that I know, as it really is, the cause of any given event and what is not the cause of this event.
Moreover, it is because of having cultivated & made much of these Four Foundations of Awareness,
that I know as they really are the cause and conditions of any given action, whether performed in
the past, future or present time.
Moreover, it is because of having cultivated & made much of these Four Foundations of Awareness,
that I know, as it really is, the gradual and final result of any given practise.
Moreover, it is because of having cultivated & made much of these Four Foundations of Awareness,
that I know, as they really are, the diverse character of whatever being.
Moreover, it is because of having cultivated & made much of these Four Foundations of Awareness,
that I know, as they really are, the natures of other beings and persons minds.
Moreover, it is because of having cultivated & made much of these Four Foundations of Awareness,
that I know, as they really are, the corruption, purification and uprising of the attainments of any
trance, mental release and concentration.
Moreover, it is because of having cultivated & made much of these Four Foundations of Awareness,
that I can remember my past lives, as they really were: One, two ... thousand births in all their
minutest detail and peculiarity.
Moreover, it is because of having cultivated & made much of these Four Foundations of Awareness,
that I know and see with divine supra-human sight, as they really are, the going & coming of beings,
death & rebirth, transmigrating according to their behaviour.
Moreover, it is because of having cultivated & made much of these Four Foundations of Awareness,
that I know, as it really is, in this very life, by my own unaided ability, the destruction of the mental
fermentations, & the calm blissful dwelling in release & insight freed from all mental fermentation...

Noble Disciples. Training the right way, the true way, the good way,
the direct way! Therefore do these eight kinds of individuals, these
four Noble pairs, deserve both gifts, self-sacrifice, offerings, much
hospitality and reverential salutation with joined palms, since this
Noble Sangha community of the Buddha's Noble disciples, is indeed
an unsurpassable & forever unsurpassed field of merit, in this world,
for this world, to honour, support, uphold, respect and protect..."

Contemplating the Dhamma

Post by Bhikkhu_Samahita »

Friends:

The 10 Contemplations are Daily Buddhist Routine!

Image

The Blessed Buddha once said:
Bhikkhus & friends: There is one contemplation, which when often practised
and developed leads to the complete turning away from the world, to detachment,
to stilling, to ceasing, to Peace, to final penetrating knowledge, to Enlightenment,
and thus to Nibbana... Any Noble Disciple who by progress has understood the
Dhamma dwells frequently in this state. Which is that one contemplation?
It is reflecting over the qualities of the Dhamma exactly like this: "Perfectly
formulated is this Buddha-Dhamma, visible right here & now, immediately effective,
timeless, inviting each & everyone to come and see for themselves, inspect, examine
and verify. Leading each & everyone through progress towards perfection. Directly
observable, experiencable and realizable by each intelligence...
