Karjakin played Black - at this level of skill, does White really have any advantage?
Good and evil have no fixed form. It's as easy to turn from doing bad to doing good as it is to flip over the hand from the back to the palm. It's simply up to us to do it. Master Hsuan Hua.

Yes, normally white does have an advantage by moving first. Approximately 75% of the wins that occur at this level are with white and 25% with black. At this level one could win playing black, it is just more rare. That is why in tournaments all players play at least 2 games with each opponent, one with black and one with white.

It is apparently so much of an advantage that if the games are all tied, they go to rapid games, still tied then to blitz games and then if still tied there is a weird rule for an Armageddon game where the player with black wins the match if that games ends in a draw! Fortunately no World Championships have been decided with a one final Armageddon game.

To help compensate for the person playing white, he/she gets 6 minutes while black only gets 5 minutes for the whole game.

Game 9 yesterday: DRAW

Game 10 today: Carlsen wins!!!

75 moves, 6 and a half hours!

That evens the match 5 to 5 with only two games left. If they're tied at the end of 12 games it goes to Rapid Chess games, approximately 30 seconds per move on average.

Here's another video -- "new" story on new movie about Carlsen:

Play the video there -- couldn't figure out how to put the video directly in here..

Neil deGrasse Tyson in the studio at the match:

At 3:00 he supports the claim that chess is art, science, sport.

At one of the games deGrasse Tyson makes the first move for Carlsen (at Carlsen's choice).

Game 11: DRAW!

Match score so far: 5.5 to 5.5

Only one game left, game 12 on Monday. Carlsen will be playing white for the final game. All he needs to do is draw to keep the match tied and send it to tie-break games.

The tie breaks consist of 4 games of Rapid chess. Both Carlsen and Karjakin have won a world championship at Rapid chess. Carlsen has won 2 championships at Rapid chess and also 2 times at Blitz, so the advantage might be to Carlsen if it goes to tie-break fast games.

Since Rapid move time seems to be the official way to end a tied match, why not shorten the allowed time for moves during the regular games? That may reduce the number of draws.

The players and the fans feel that would reduce the quality of the play. There already exists a World Rapid Chess Championship (Carlsen has won that twice so far in years 2014, 2015).

At about an average of 3 minutes per move with the openings going very fast, the players accumulate some time on their clocks and are able to make some 'deep think' moves. You might have noticed Karjakin, especially, sometimes taking over 20 minutes to make a move when he has some stored up time.

Game 12: DRAW!

Final classical time control match score:

6-6

And this means the match goes to Rapid Chess tie-break games. Four games on Wednesday 1100 NYC time. If still tied then to five 2 game blitz matches.

Game 12 lasted only about 35 minutes, 30 moves, looks like Carlsen was content with a draw as they exchanged pieces rapidly and then agreed on a draw. Carlsen most likely has the advantage (superior fast chess skills) in the faster time controls for the tie break games.

I'm watching live right now too. It is game 4 just after Carlsen won game 3 (playing black). All Carlsen needs is a draw in this final tie-break Rapid chess game number 4. It looks like Carlsen will be retaining the title.
