Is it just me or is it the same as Buddhism?
just why don't they accept the historical Buddha as a tirthankara? I'd have no problems calling Mahavira a buddha
(will appreciate any additional info about the Sramanic movement, ty)
Thoughts/Opinions on Jainism?
Re: Thoughts/Opinions on Jainism?
The Jains are referred to in the suttas as Nigaṇṭhas. Several suttas directly refute their beliefs, such as MN 101.silver surfer wrote:Is it just me or is it the same as Buddhism?

Re: Thoughts/Opinions on Jainism?
There are some marked differences in the doctrine as noted in this thread. The outer forms of the practice are remarkably similar. I made a note of the many similarities here:

They are both Sramana traditions and this is no doubt the reason for the many similarities. Here is a pretty cool graphic of the history of religions (zoom in to see the Sramana paths) and you can see just how close Buddhism and Jainism are, paralleling each other.

But it seems much more similarities were between Ramaputta/Kalama sects than between Niganthas and Buddhism. And the major difference with Niganthas - is the painful practice/asceticism doctrine (in terms of actual practice) and self-view (in terms of philosophical views).
