They cleaned up my avatar...

Post by mikenz66 »

I'm just back from three weeks in Thailand, mostly in northern Ang Thong. Had a chance to revisit Wat Phra Non Jaksi, which is nearby in Sing Buri Province. The large reclining Buddha in my avatar has had a facelift since I was last able to visit. I think the avatar photo is from 2007...

Hard to see the scale in the photos, but it's 46m long, so slightly larger than the one in Wat Pho, Bangkok, though that one has more elaborate decorations... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wat_Pho

How did they get his eyes to open like that, has he awakened????
18 years ago I made one of the most important decisions of my life and entered a local Cambodian Buddhist Temple as a temple boy and, for only 3 weeks, an actual Therevada Buddhist monk. I am not a scholar, great meditator, or authority on Buddhism, but Buddhism is something I love from the Bottom of my heart. It has taught me sobriety, morality, peace, and very importantly that my suffering is optional, and doesn't have to run my life. I hope to give back what little I can to the Buddhist community, sincerely former monk John

Gosh the statue is super-shiny now. I wonder what kind of paint that is? Maybe actual gold paint with several layers of gloss coat on top.
What were you doing up there in Thailand, Mike?
Then,
saturated with joy,
you will put an end to suffering and stress.

Yes, I'm not sure how they do that. Three years ago that building was closed for renovations...

Thailand was a family visit (my partner's family). And a great break. It's very relaxing to spend three weeks not talking to native English speakers (and seeing only a few from a distance ). Plenty of time to think, and catch up on recorded Dhamma talks...

Stangely, there were lots of foreigners at Erawan Falls (Kanchanaburi). What's jarring about foreigners in Thailand is the way they dress

When you're used to how much more modestly Thai people dress...
