Hi from Phil

Post by phil »

Hi all

I came across this forum by chance. I assume it's a branch off from e-sangha. I am trying as always to wean myself off the internet (because of the time I waste at places like Youtube) but am confident that the day will come when I use it exclusively for Dhamma discussion, which the Buddha taught is absolutely essential for developing understanding. I look forward to discussing with you all and for forming valuable Dhamma friendships, though it will mostly be now and then for me, for the time being.

As for the personal stuff, I'm a 48 year old Canadian ESL teacher living in Japan.

Metta,

Phil

Welcome and nice to meet you!

Hi phil
:anjali:
Blog, Suttas, Aj Chah, Facebook.

He who knows only his own side of the case knows little of that. His reasons may be good, and no one may have been able to refute them.
But if he is equally unable to refute the reasons on the opposite side, if he does not so much as know what they are, he has no ground for preferring either opinion …
...
He must be able to hear them from persons who actually believe them … he must know them in their most plausible and persuasive form.

“No lists of things to be done. The day providential to itself. The hour. There is no later. This is later. All things of grace and beauty such that one holds them to one's heart have a common provenance in pain. Their birth in grief and ashes.”

loud gush the streamlets,
but great rivers flow silently.

Hi all

I'm going to be taking a break from internet Dhamma discussion for awhile, but I thank you for this great community and look forward to discussing with you again - someday!
