hi. i'm not myself today.
(i'm also Ian.)
i'm going to keep this brief, but will certainly come back and play havoc with the Member Bios thread ere long.
i'm a 51-year-old male currently enjoying having the option to not work, and of living alone in a quiet place, and taking advantage of this situation to fashion a somewhat monastic (okay: lay-monastic) life for myself. my life is dedicated primarily to studying Vipassana through the Vipassana Fellowship's online course (http://www.vipassana.com;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; i can see that embedding URLs on this site is going to take some study), reading Dhamma, petting my two cats, and wondering - ever wondering! - where i stand on The Women Question (sometimes i can see how lay Buddhist is not an oxymoron and other times - most of the time - i just can't).
oh much to say. like that i shaved my head last night! in support of my practice. and one part of me was a little relieved and another a little disappointed to discover i don't think i look as goofy with a shaved head as i did the one other time i shaved my head, back somewhere in the mists of the 1990's.
*anyways*...i'm hungry, and that's a craving i've found it's best i eventually attend to. so i stop here. but i'll be writing more, trust me.
great to be here. metta for everyone!!! on me!!!

Welcome!
Liberation is the inevitable fruit of the path and is bound to blossom forth when there is steady and persistent practice. The only requirements for reaching the final goal are two: to start and to continue. If these requirements are met there is no doubt the goal will be attained. This is the Dhamma, the undeviating law.

Hi Ian,
From my reading of Cormac McCarthy, I don't think he is Buddhist. I tend to think that many Buddhists will recognize many of his insights. For sure he is one of the greatest writers of our time.

Ian, welcome to DW!
To avoid all evil, to cultivate good, and to cleanse one's mind — this is the teaching of the Buddhas.

Re: hi :)
thank you all! boy, isn't this a nice place to be.
@Ben: great to know - i'll have to look into him. when i wrote that i was confusing him in my mind with Frank McCourt (i've never read the work of either, which is probably how i confused them ).
thank you again, all - i have a wonderful feeling about this site, and YOU'RE RESPONSIBLE.
and metta!
