Re: Bhante Vimalaramsi

Hi All, I have heard some criticisms of late of Bhante Vimalaramsi and would be interested in hearing why some people have an issue or issues with him. I haven't heard him personally attack any other teachers so would appreciate links to the same if possible. In addition, his techniques seem sound ...

Will do. Do you exclusively meditate on loving kindness or do you do breath relaxation too? I'm also curious as to when you switched to metta, what you were doing before metta, and what differences you saw in your development after the switch. Thanks, your advice is very much appreciated! :th...

Re: Key component missing? Does the wheel turn smoothly with

Hi The most detailed I found is (http://www.accesstoinsight.org/lib/authors/nanamoli/wheel007.html) : 11. Methodical Practice: from the Patisambhidamagga (traditionally ascribed to the arahant Sariputta) The heart-deliverance of loving-kindness is practiced with unspecified extension, with specified...

Re: Rethinking Dependent Arising.

Hi All I have read those 2 suttas but I dont see where this distinction is established however maybe this can help, when we go in reverse order through the links we see the links in reverse order and we understand that from the cessation of this it comes the cessation of that, for example after seei...

Re: Bhante Vimalaramsi

Hi tiltbillings I have never spoken to Bhante Vimalaramsi but I think that I can correctly assert that the attainment is such because after some time I had again the experience of cessation of perception and feeling and this time I experienced the fruition as well, now what follows the fruition is r...

Re: Did the Buddha make mistakes?

Yes, most, if not all, teachers are imperfect. Even the Buddha made mistakes.... Sorry for off topic, but I like to ask, what kind of mistakes of the Lord Buddha do you have in mind. Suttas classify crocodiles and turtles as an animals which are born in water. Unfortunately, it is not true. Did you...

Re: Bhante Vimalaramsi

I say that what follows the fruition cannot be mistaken comparing it with the path attainment that is seeing the links of dependent origination, this links present themselves as blinks of light that can be easily mistaken for something else or for something without importance. The links of dependen...

Re: Did the Buddha make mistakes?

Hi All An interesting perspective on this is that it might be possible to attribute to the Buddha infallibility on certain fields (or all) but what about Gotama before his awakening as a lay man enjoying the sensual pleasures? On MN 86 we read that the Buddha says that he has stopped to exercise vio...

Some meditation centers like DhammaSukha run online retreats that could be helpful as well.

Check the suttas I quoted, you will see there what are the brahmaviharas recomended for. Also you can see that the brahmaviharas lead you higher than the 4rth Jhana.

Re: Key component missing? Does the wheel turn smoothly with

I have been practicing with Bhante Vimalaramsi Brahmaviharas method for a few months now, the progress I had has been amazing, the very first day I decided to follow exactly his instructions I went through all the jhanas and reached cessation of perception and feeling, then I saw dependent originat...

Re: I think I'm not compatible with the Goenka Technique/Net

One of the things that are amazing about the Dhamma is that is immediately effective, as it says in the Satippathana Sutta (MN 10), "Let alone half a month. If anyone would develop these four frames of reference in this way for seven days , one of two fruits can be expected for him: either gnos...

Re: Did the Buddha make mistakes?

I read the transcript where you mentioned but I think is important to clear out that the sort of mistake that Thanissaro Bhiku is talking about is highly subjective, saying the wrong thing to the wrong person, but what could be classed as wrong thing to the wrong person?, causing unnecessary sufferi...

Re: I think I'm not compatible with the Goenka Technique/Net

For long years I followed a teaching than went like this: 1.- Be a witness of your thoughts, feelings or breath, do not judge 2.- Do it without a target without a specific purpose 3.- Do it like its a game, playfully 4.- Be patient After about 5 years of normal practice of about 30 min meditating a ...

Re: Did the Buddha make mistakes?

Interesting to note that this perfection is restricted to the Dhamma, kind of a thorough specialized knowledge, It doesn't seem to say that it is as wide as we tend to think when we hear perfection or such. Also the quoted sutta says "In the case of words that the Tathagata knows to be", i...

Check the suttas I quoted, you will see there what are the brahmaviharas recomended for. Also you can see that the brahmaviharas lead you higher than the 4rth Jhana. My point in asking that question was that, as BillyMac indicated, not every type of practice or strategy that the Buddha prescribed w...

Re: Hello all

Hi Vagabond Welcome to the forum. You have mentioned that you are interested in meditation and I think that is pretty much how we all westerners get in to Buddhism in first place, but you will save yourself a lot of suffering if you understand from the first moment that meditation starts with genero...

Re: Key component missing? Does the wheel turn smoothly with

By the way I don't claim that the Brahamaviharas are a superior object of meditation, I remember reading that all the Buddhas used the breath to achieve awakening and also Sariputta and Moggallanna as well so that is telling us is a powerful tool.

Re: Did the Buddha make mistakes?

What about this perspective, we know that Saripputa was the chief disciple in wisdom, this is telling us that although there were many arahants at the time he was superior in wisdom, hence there is superior wisdom and inferior wisdom within the Arahant sphere, as wisdom is indirectly defined in MN 4...

Hi On AN 08 (http://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/an/an08/an08.063.than.html) we read: "May the Blessed One teach me the Dhamma in brief! May the One Well-gone teach me the Dhamma in brief! It may well be that I will understand the Blessed One's words. It may well be that I will become an he...
